How big is your Havanese at the withers?

This subject came up in another thread and I thought it was interesting.

So mi Popi measured mi and I am somewhere around 11 to 11.5 inches at the withers....at the bigger end of the acceptable range. Incidentally, I weigh 14 pounds as a young adult. Havanese tend to look much bigger than they are because of all the fluffy hair.

What is the size of your doggie at the withers?

Hola Amigo Ricky, I am the same as you. My mum says I am a little tank though, weighing in at 16 pounds. It doesn't slow me down though.

I think Archer got much taller after he was neutered. It was noticeable. He is 11.5 " at the shoulder, but weighs 11.8 lbs.

Bella is 8- 8.5" at the withers and 6.5-7 pounds. She is slight boned
Fred is 11.5 and 15.5 pounds. He is slight boned
Scudder is 10.5 inches and 16.5 pounds. He is very big boned.

When I got Bella almost 11 years ago, there was a weight limit. I think it was 7-13 pounds.

Kodi is 11.5" (measured officially 3 times by AKC for agility) and big boned. He's 17 lbs, and has no extra fat on him.

I'm surprised to hear from the rest of you how many tall ones are out there. Around here, Kodi looks like a GIANT next to all the other Havs in the area. I guess they just like/breed for smaller ones here in NE!

Si, tia Karen, that is the purpose of this thread. Hear on the West Coast, I appear to be about average size for an adult male when being compared visually (nothing scientific) with other Havanese. Most of the females are only slightly smaller. I am wondering if Havanese are being bred for the bigger end of the scale, out West.

besos, Ricky

They shouldn't be being bred THAT big, though. (on purpose…) the "preferred" range is 9"-10 1/2". They are not disqualified unless they are under 8 1/2" or over 11 1/2", but the standard clearly calls for the middle range as being the preferred size. If breeders aren't shooting for that middle range, they will have too many pups go out of standard, either on the high end or the low end. (depending on which direction they are breeding in)

Just measured my two... Scout is 11" at the withers and 17lbs. I chose him because he was the largest and first born. His mother was on the small size. The breeder said she thought he looked like he would be a big boy. Scout looks larger because he is quite the furry guy. My husband wanted another one just like Scout. Truffles is 8" and 10.5lbs. She looks just like a girl. They are perfect together.

Sheba is 9.5" (as best I can measure, because of squirminess). She weighs 7 pounds, 6 ounces. But she is only 10 months.
