Getting a kitten

Our Pixie (female of course) is 11 months old now and we'd like to get a kitten as a playmate for her. I know another Hav would be ideal, but we miss our cat of 18 1/2 years and one dog is enough for us. Does anyone have suggestions as to what sex we should get OR any experience you can share??? Also, we won't have a kitty declawed, so we're getting a product called soft paws. They're caps for the cats nails and keep them from scratching. Anyone use these??? Thanks...

Here's another:

http://havaneseforum.com/showthread....ight=havs+cats

There are more, too...try searching for "cats" or "havs and cats". I think a cat is good company for a hav. I've got one, and they get along well...and the cat was about 5 years old when Tucker came home. Nitro (the cat) makes the rules, as far as she's concerned.

Oh, and as far as gender...I don't really think it would matter when it comes to the difference between the species.

Thanks Sheri, I was thinking it wouldn't matter on the sex. We had a male cat for so long and he was the perfect pet. Now I'm leaning to a boy, but I'll go with personallity. At the shelter near us we can take Pixie with us and see how they interact.

It may take them awhile to adjust to each other, especially since Pixie is older, but, I doubt it takes long. You just may not be able to tell much by going to the shelter with Pixie. Actually, I'd be a little nervous about taking her into the shelter...but, maybe it is a good idea.

Also, Nitro isn't declawed. When she and Tucker wrestle, she pretty much keeps her claws in, or at least just uses them to hold onto his hair as he spins her around on the wood floor, ha!

My Persians had dogs in the house when they were kittens, so they were totally unfazed by the dogs. One of them plays with the dogs, the other just lies around and ignores them.

Another member (karlabythec) got a kitten awhile back. She had a Bengal cat then got an American Bobtail kitten. Here's the intro thread w/pix. She says both breeds have dog-like qualities. Here's another thread w/pix of the kitten.

I had the cats before I got the dogs. Kodi never seemed to mind them that much, until we got Shelby. She will chase them around the house. I think it is some game she is playing with them, or maybe the Hav herding instinct.

Our cats are not declawed either. I cut their nails myself, and that is all that has to be done. They have NEVER tried to hurt Linus. One cat hates Luke (our big dog) and has "bopped" him a few times, but never with nails.

Friends have used Soft Paws. You need to watch because they fall off as the nail grows and your dog or cat could eat them.
