Not a sneeze, not a reverse sneeze...

Scooter and Murphy are both making a strange noise, it's not a sneeze or a reverse sneeze but sounds as if they're trying to blow their noses. They even fling their heads as if they're trying to get something out. The best way to describe the sound is "phhhhhhtttt, phhhhhhtttt, phhhhhhtttt, phhhhhhtttt". (I don't speak dog so that's the best I can do!)

Nothing has changed in our house or yard, no new cleaners or chemicals so I have no idea what's causing this. Is it worthy of a trip to the vet? Anybody else's dogs do this?

Tucker has done a sort of snort several times in a row on certain days. His eyes have also been more watery, especially if we spend time outside...so for him I've been figuring maybe seasonal allergies. I never would have thought about dogs having seasonal allergies!

Is it occasional or all the time? If the boys are not in distress I’d just watch them for a day or two. The flinging of the head might give me more concern than the sound. Smarty has done the reverse sneeze a couple times and if I had not seen it in one of our post I would have panicked.

Scooter has been doing the reverse sneeze quite a bit too. When they play rough with each other and make noise they'll do the "phhhhhttt" noise when they take a break but now they're just doing it at random times so that's why it concerns me a little.

Ann can you get a video of them? Remeber you also just boarded them for vacation, they could have caught Kennel Cough.

I watched a video of kennel cough because that was the first thing I thought of. I'll find the camera and see if I can get it. Wouldn't they do more of a cough?

Ann are they phhhting at you? or at each other? And what do you mean by a head flip...a real flip or just a cock for emphasis? My boys. mostly Jasper snorts at us when he wants something from us...food, water, a walk to be picked up. They both did it once in the vets office. My vet says it's a dominace thing. But with Jasper I like it because it is his way of communicating a need.

Yep, if you can manage to catch it, a video would help. Marble does this weird choking/snorting thing every once in awhile, but of course, the video camera is never around when I need it.

I wish I could describe it better. I doubt I can catch it on video as it's so random but if they don't stop it I'm going to give the vet a call to be safe.

IMO, I don't think its worthy of a trip to the vet. Mimi has always done this & my only concern is to not be close by as her snot flies lol. Not exactly sure what it is but makes me think of a cat hairball. Allergies possibly? Or just them clearing their nasal passage.
