"Accidents" while I'm eating?!?

Miley has regressed to pooping in the house lately. I've noticed she does it WHILE I'm eating. DH & I usually eat in the living room in our recliners. She'll pick a spot on the carpet and just go. Sometimes I can catch her and quickly take her outside. My solution for this is to put the dogs outside while we eat, but WHY is she doing this??? DH is getting frustrated with her. He wants to rub her nose in it, but I don't believe in that method of training, so it causes a rift between us. She's a very smart dog, and I know she knows it's wrong. Any ideas??

BJ did that a couple of times a month or so back. I couldn't figure out whether he was taking advantage of a momentary lapse in my attention, using it to get my attention or . . . .?

I started putting him in his pen while I ate, which is what I did when I first got him, and that took care of it. He can see me and seems philosophical about it.

Glad to know I'm not the only one to experience this. Jane

Sounds like an attention getter to me. As soon as we sit down to eat the dogs ring the bells to go out, right next to my chair in the kitchen. Now we take them out before we sit down and then completely ignore them while we're eating. Since we started doing that they come over to lie under the table when we eat. Occasionally one of them will ring but we don't acknowledge it any way and whoever did it will lie down.

Rubbing the nose in the poop is not going to help so skip that one. I think you have to restrain her while you eat. In her pen or crate, outside or perhaps tethered to you so you can immediately catch her and correct her.

As to why, who knows why these little ones do some of the things they do? Attention? Stimulation of the smell of food? I wouldn't worry about why, I'd just try to fix the problem.

Step up taking out taking Miley outside and praising again when the deed is done. Throw some dry kibble where Miley is pooing.

Dexter had a large poo accident on one of the nights I was working. I came home to a soiled rug outside the door and then when I came inside, there was poo (at least 8 spots)...it was diarrhea. That was a few weeks ago and has not used the carpet area again to poo.

I am guessing Dexter really had to poo that night several times and could not wake up dh. Dh did not know about the carpet areas that were soiled, I just cleaned it up.

My dh is old school too! If dh only knew how much I cleaned up after Dexter. Dh was expecting Dexter to be housebroken in one week! From reading all the threads about poo, I expected it would take a good while to housebreak Dexter and any sooner than that would be a blessing. I was blessed..........

So, I hear you with trying to correct Miley. Rubbing Miley's nose into the poo will only make matters worse....I know you know this, but it needed to be said for everyone else who reads this thread.

Have you changed Miley's eating times by any chance?

Hang in there, this too shall pass
