Hi everyone. I also would like to introduce myself. I'm Vicky and I have 2 Havs, Samantha (Sami) and Darin. We also have another furkid, Molly who is a rat terrier mix. We had an English Setter/Brittany Spaniel mix, Jackson, who we had to put down a couple of months ago. He was 15 1/2 years old!
Sami is 2 and Darin is about 8 months. Sami's story is interesting, I think. My husband is a Boy Scout leader and one of the boys was doing his Eagle project at the pet rescue where his mom volunteers. We went down to help and Norma (the mom) said I had to see this little dog that was brought in a couple of days ago. (I had been wanting to get a Yorkie). She took me in to see her and Norma let the dog out of the pen and she came right over to me! Cutest little thing, I fell in love that moment. So, I went to get my husband and he said OK we could get her. They didn't know what kind of dog she was, they guessed a Shih Tzu/Maltese mix. We had Sami almost a year and we tried a new groomer. When we picked Sami up, he said, "I think she is Havanese." We didn't understand what he said since he has an accent, so we went home and Googled "Dog breeds beginning with "H". Havanese popped up and we both went "That's it!" We had never heard of Havanese before so we started researching them online. We even went to a dog show in our area and told some of the Havanese breeders this story so they said to bring her the next day. We took her and "yep, looks like a Havanese to me" One breeder thought she was a mix because she is taller than she should be (13 in. at the withers) but I think she is just a tall Hav.
So, needless to say, we have fallen in love with this breed! She is SO spoiled and really a daddy's girl. He calls her Princess P, hence my user name! Since I really have MHS, we decided to get another one. We got Darin through HALO. A friend and I flew from Miami to Cleveland to pick him up. Since he is a puppymill survivor, he is very skittish when we go to pick him up, but if we are sitting or laying down, he'll come right over and want to be picked up. He is very sweet and we've had him for only about 3 months so I'm sure he will get over this skittishness.
If I had a bigger house, I would have more! They are the most amazing dogs! I also have 3 kids, a daughter who is 24 and living in NYC, a 20 yr old son, living at home and attending community college and a 15 yr old son who will be in 10th grade. I have been married almost 22 yrs and we have lived in FL for the past 13 years, coming from PA. Sorry this is so long! I'm really glad I found this site!
