Newbie -- looking for doggie daycare

Hi All,

I'm brand new to this forum, so hope that i'm posting in the right place. i am also a brand new havanese mommy -- my puppy will have his last shots in a few weeks. i live in the san jose, california area and would like to find a daycare that either a) caters to small dogs or b) is one that you just love for your dog.

any referrals out there?

many thanx in advance.

Welcome to the Havanese Forum Joyce!

Where is your puppy picture? We love pictures! We have lots of California Havs here, hopefully they will post.

Check out your Vet, groomers, or google ..... kennel AND (Insert your town here)

and see what pops up. I would visit the kennel/daycare before leaving your Hav.

Joycie:

Welcome to the forum! I am a relatively recent Bay Area puppy mommy, too, so I understand your predicament.

Do you live and work in San Jose, or do you by any chance commute north? I know SF Hound Lounge and K9 Playtime (both in San Francisco) have small dog rooms, and SF Hound Lounge even makes sure young puppies get the extra naps that they need. I have also heard good things about Planet Pooch in Redwood City.

If none of those work for you, I agree with Linda’s suggestions, and add the following: Look for a puppy social in your area (google “puppy social” + “San Jose”), as well as a puppy school (I am pretty sure that Sirius Puppy Training has classes in San Jose). In addition to giving you some great experiences with your puppy, you will meet other puppy owners (as well as the instructors!) who will be able to give you some current first-hand input and advice.

Wow! Thanx everybody! i am really looking for referrals for daycare -- i've heard some disturbing things about some of the daycare centers in our area.

i actually live in santa cruz, but am looking for work on the penninsula, so palo alto to san jose (and of course santa cruz) would work. but who knows, maybe i'll find work in sf -- so it never hurts to have a referral

since i am a newbie, i'm going to *try* to attach a photo of my baby -- his name is niles and he's three months old.

thanx again for such a warm welcome everyone.

Welcome Joycie,
I don't know many specific places by you, but I did try 3 before I finally settled on one. I based it on their reaction to my dog and the length of time they were willing to spend answering my questions. The first place I tried was considered the premier place here, but they grabbed by dog and barely answered any questions. They did nothing to reassure me, and I never went back. The second place didn't separate the dogs as well, and I couldn't observe or check on him. Like you, I wanted one (and found one) that separates the dogs by 4 sizes. I can view my dog online while he is there, which is something I love. I went with the PreppyPet franchise, because the owners were great. Good luck with your search!

Joyce, we used to live in SF Bay Area and I e-mailed a few doggie owners I know to get recommendations for you. One of the puppy owners in my breeder's group sent the following info:

"I have a friend that boards at Paws Crossing and raves about it. They have also gotten great reviews. They are located in Campbell which is a border town of San Jose.

http://www.pawscrossing.com/ I have seen the facility and it is nice.

Please avoid Paws Place in Campbell. I found out Rianna got out once ( and they are on a very busy main street- they initially didn't realize she was even missing ) one of the gals that worked there said one of the workers hit a dog, and they have no night supervision. It is very hot in the summer also."

From another friend:
Recently I read an article about a newly opened business called "A Dog's Life". They are affiliated with the Humane Society of Silicon Vally. They do boarding, daycare and training. There are branches in Milpitas, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Check out their website: dogslife.biz/daycare

Best, Poornima

He is so cute! It looks like some eyebrows there and brown on the muzzle. Is this what I am seeing?

What a cutie!

I live in SF and Lola goes to K9 Playtime in SOMA. I love it. They have a small dog room and really loving supervisors. And, I like this best, they have K9 grass in the room and they train the dogs to use the grass. I used to take Lola to Wag and the dogs would just poop and pee anywhere in the room. Well, I can imagine that Lola did some snacking there... I also love that they sell half day packages so I can take her in at 9 and pick her up at 3 and it is only $19.

So, if you ever wind up in SF, K9 Playtime is the place!
