The "wait" command

This subject came up in another thread. I don't want to Hi Jack that thread and this subject deserves a thread of its own.

Tia Karen is so right about the "wait" command. It is a basic command and can save your doggies life in some situations. In obedience classes we have been working hard on "wait." Our trainer, tia Alicia, tinks it is essential for all doggies to learn this command right from the start. Tia Alicia says that Ricky is now an expert at "wait". When Popi puts mi food bowl down, I now have to "sit" and "wait" to eat until he releases mi. When a door or gate is opened, I have to "wait" for Popi to go through first and then he releases mi. When someone comes to the front door and it is opened, I have to "wait" inside until Momi or Popi gives me the all clear. At a sidewalk intersection, I have to "wait" until we both look both ways before I am released. We are now working on "down" and "wait" outside at distances of 10, 20, & 30 yards. This is quite challenging and very advanced... especially when Lucy next door is sacheting around in her yard!

Havadoggies, work on your "wait" command, you Momi will like it.

So right amigo Ricky. Very important. As far as when to start. Start immediately. All training can start immediately, it becomes habit when they are little, like the wait to eat or go through the door.

Ahora (right now, never two young, well 8 weeks maybe). You can do this informally at your casa when very young. Then sign up for a formal "puppy obedience" class. Different trainers have different age restrictions, but in general, the sooner the better. I started formal training a little late for mi age, but Popi had some experience in training, so we did a lot of informal training in casa, so I caught up quickly.

Excellent tip Ricky thank you! I have been praising Mia when she waits for me to finish a task "look at Mia wait so nicely, but used "leave it" and stay instead of wait when wait is try most appropriate. Now I must teach my husband, who still doesn't understand the difference between "drop it" and leave it.
Also the "trade" command is working fabulously!!
Training and seeing it work in real life is very satisfying! Ha.

I agree, Ricky! We still need more work on that one! Just to add another, I used to say "drop it" until I was blue in the face with no reaction, but if I say, "drop it and I'll give you a treat", it works like a charm. She drops what she stole and waits for me to return with more tasty goods!

Mi Momi knows exactly what you are talking about!!!!!!! Momi say, "Ricky you easy to train, but your Popi is a training disaster. I give up!"

This is good work Zoe y Momi. But amiga Zoe needs to learn to "drop it" without being reward by a treat, just praise. Start by giving her a treat every other time she drops it. Then once every three times. GRADUALLY, work it until no treat are required to "drop it", just praise. It took mi several months two learn this, but now I drop it on command, out of habit, and I give it no further thought.
