Benjy went to his family reunion!!!

Benjy just turned 8 months. We got him from his breeders about 4 months ago. We haven't seen them since then but have kept in contact through emails. We sometimes have questions. They love updates and pictures because he is like one of their children to them.

His breeders emailed us and let us know they would be at a dog show and they would love for us to bring Benjy and get reaquainted. So we got to see them again. And Benjy got to see both his parents, a brother, and a sister again. (We had met them all before we bought Benjy.) They had an awning at the side of their RV so it was comfortable in the shade.

It was very hot at the fair grounds and I am so glad I remembered to put his stroller in the car. I bet the pavement was mighty hot for bare feet. And we brought water and a bowl. Naturally, we bought him a toy at one of the vendors. You put food in it and he has to figure out how to get it out.

They had dock diving, something I never would have thought of. Just the bigger dogs were doing it.

I couldn't tell if Benjy remembered any of them or not. He went right to them and was excited to see them. But he loves everyone and is always friendly.

I was wondering, has anyone else ever seen their breeder (if they got their dog at one) later in the life of the dog? Or has your dog seen his/her parents again? If so, how did it go?

Jeff & Sue
PS Here is Benjy's latest picture. It is a little dark because it was a rainy day.

Molly has been to a "family reunion" at her breeders. There were over 20 Havanese there, including her parents and three of her brothers. She is a small dog and I think she was intimidated by being around so many larger dogs at once. She was interacting more with the people that were there than the dogs. She did have some nice playtime with one of her brothers and some of the other smaller size Havs. She is more comfortable playing one on one with another dog rather than a pack of dogs.

We've been back several times to visit the Kings. While Kodi is friendly to all people, he's not a big "lap dog" even with us, let alone people he doesn't know. He immediately climbed into Tom's lap, even on our first trip back. (I think he was about 3 at the time) he was perfectly happy playing with the other dogs, but it's harder to tell if he "knew" them, as he will happily play with ANY Havanese. (Or any gentle dog, for that matter!)

At Pam and Tom's the stud dogs are kept separate from the girls and young dogs to prevent "oops" pregnancies, so he really didn't interact with his father. But he probably didn't see much of him as a small puppy, either. His mom had a new litter the first time we were there, and was WAY more interested in them than she was in Kodi. . He has tended to play with his younger siblings and cousins when we've visited. He struck up a real friendship with Willow, a full sibling from a later litter.

Over all, when we visit, he settles right into the King's household as if he'd never left.

How fun! Did you get any pictures of the group?
Benji is absolutely adorable!
Sophie will see her breeder next weekend at the dog show for the first time. I have her entered in puppy class both days so will be fun to see how she reacts to seeing him. and whichever dogs he has with him.

I have been getting Sophie used to riding in a stroller too. Hallie always rode in one at dog shows (so much easier than pulling around crate on wheels) and as she got older, rode on long walks after she got her walking in. She went absolutely everywhere with me so also rode in one in stores, etc. Hallie had 5 strollers, one for shows, one for shopping, one for all terrain, one big enough I could put all of my camera gear in there with her and one as a backup.

Sophie is doing well so far but I have a feeling she won't appreciate sitting in it without me right there we haven't tested that yet.

The breeders had all their dogs in a big exercise pen. They thought it best not to put Benjy in the pen with them. Instead, they took one or two out of the cage at a time for Benjy to play with. He is bigger than his siblings. Possibly bigger than his parents. They all got along just fine except that his brother kept jumping on him.

His brother was a pest. He kept shoving his face in Benjy's like he was head butting him. Benjy did a little growl and he stopped. The breeder said it was ok that he growled. That was the first time he had ever growled at anyone or thing.

Benjy has a stroller and a carriage/bugger that is bigger. They both have storage areas for bringing supplies and putting things like purses in. Benjy LOVES them both. We keep one in the car and one in the family room. Sometimes he leads us to the one in the family room and rests his paw on a wheel. He loves to be pushed around the inside of the house too! Picture a king sitting on a grand chair on beams, and there are four men carrying the beams with the chair mounted on top. He feels like royalty! And he is up higher where can see more.

Below is a picture of some of his family. The dog in the far left (back) corner is Benjy's Dad. The dog in the far left (front) corner is Benjy's Mom. The black dog is no relation. Far right (front) is his sister. His brother is not in the pen at the moment. He is out playing with Benjy. Benjy is in a picture by himself. I included him so you can compare his coloring to his family.

I am so glad we went. It was hard to find them at the big fair grounds. But it was worth it.

He is such a cutie. Funny he is bigger than his parents but that seems to happen a lot in human families too lol. What a fun day for you all.

Yes, Benji is so cute! He looks like a really fun dog with a really big personality!!

To answer your original question, sadly my breeder has ignored my attempts at communication, from about 2 or 3 weeks after I purchased a pup from her. Prior to the purchase and after expressing an interest in a Havanese, she used to contact me frequently.

So sorry to hear that. I would never breed but if I did I can't imagine not wanting to keep up with the puppies I sold. Sounds like it might be more about the $$ for her. At least you got a darling dog out of it!
I'm very lucky to have a great breeder who is patient with all of my questions and photos I send him.
