Insurance for your Havanese?

Hello out there!
I am a constant lurker, but haven't done much posting yet. I appreciate all the advice and information available on this site.

We are wondering whether it is worth it to get vet insurance for our puppy Phoebe. She's a healthy 7 month Havanese puppy. Our veterinarian gave us some information on pet insurance but we don't know how commonly people actually buy it. I have one friend whose sister is a vet- she says it's not necessary for healthy young dogs.

Can you please post whether you have insurance, and if so, can you make suggestions or comments on your experiences with different companies? Did they pay? Are there crazy deductibles? are there extras where they make a lot of money, but are not necessary etc etc?

Thanks in advance!

I have Pet Insurance for 2 year old Lola. I bought it when she was 1. I bought it for major accidents and/or illnesses, so I have a high deductible by choice. I have read tales on here of people dealing with kidney issues, hip issues, and various things that need surgery. Seems they can rack up $1,000s really quickly. I wanted to be sure that I would have no hesitation to get Lola the care she needs if something bad came up.

I bought PetPlan. I like that they cover breed "hereditary" issues. You can set your own plan combinations.

I have never had a claim, so experience to report there. Lola has had trouble with foxtails that had to be surgically removed, but the cost was under my $500 deductible.

More information on insurance. I still do not have insurance, but I do set aside money each paycheck and............I watch Dexter very carefully

I keep hearing stories about insurance agencies not covering some conditions, not paying like they are suppose to, hearing some agencies not covering for pre-existing conditions....let's say your Hav gets diabetes one year and the next year you renew, they will not cover diabetics because now it is a pre-existing condition.

I would like to hear some stories about the Insurance agencies paying on claims, what kind of hassle do you have to go through, did they raise the rates the next year because you were actual using the insurance and have they had the insurance for more than 5 years.

Stories please........

Ironic this gets pulled up again.

I, too, am going to go with Petplan. I wish I could just watch him like a hawk, but reading the stories that I've read and hearing my co-workers and how they wished they had pet insurance has convinced me that even watching him like a hawk won't prevent hereditary issues.

I saw a discount code for petplan for us forum members taht didn't end too well - I tested it and it still works - are we still allowed to use it? Anyone?

Ricky has PetBest insurance and it's been a financial lifesaver!! He needed 2 ACL surgeries(only one was covered) and he spent 3 days/nights in emergency for
getting into raisins... All cost LOTS of $$$ and the ins.
paid 80% - deductible.
