Covering up food

I hope this hasn't been discussed before, I searched and didn't see anything. We have our food in one of those self-filling canisters. This is leftover from when we had Jackson (our big dog that died a few months ago). I've noticed that Darin will go over to the bowl and push his nose on the tile floor like he wants to push something over the food. So, the other day, I dropped a dishtowel down by the bowl and sure enough, after a while, he came over and pushed the towel up over the food! It is the funniest thing, like he's trying to hide it from the other dogs! I just wondered if anyone else's dogs do this. Could it be a rescue thing?

Cru does it and he has certainly never been deprived of food! LOL
He drives me crazy with it sometimes because of the 'scrooching' noise his bowl makes when he's pushing it. He will push it until it stops against a wall then drag anything he can find to cover it with. Dish towels, dirty clothes, the cushion out of Bunni's bed....

My Diva will act like she is covering up a treat or bone. There is nothing there to cover it up with but she goes thru all the motions. Augie doesn't do it at all. The first couple months I had her, I thought she was crazy. LOL

Bella covers her food, because she picky. She will only eat off the floor. She pushes the food into a pile, with her nose, and then covers it if she can find something.
