HELP! Found litter of kittens

Hi everyone,
My Mom's cleaners told her that they saw kittens in her back yard the other day. This morning, she saw at least 2 kittens and a Mommy on her back deck. She says they are adorable. She put food out (yes, I know, they are hers now) and two kittens had a feast. One of her friends has been through this before and told her to put beds, food, water and litter box on her screened in porch for them and try to get them comfortable and seperated from their Mommy. We don't know if Mommy is feral or not at this point. My Mom is a true animal lover and although she can't keep them (she has 1 hav and 2 cats already), she wants to be sure to socialize them with humans, get the checked by a vet, and find them homes. Any advice would be appreciated. My Mom is on the forum, but she was not sure how to post a new thread so she asked me to post it for her.

Hi Karen,

Your mom is a sweetie to rescue the kittens. Wild cats are such a problem and it is so frustrating to me that people don't bother to have their animals neutered and then ditch them along the road when they don't want them anymore. They end up having litter after litter which just perpetuates the problem. I think the advice your mom received was good advice but I would add that if you can catch mamma kitty you can take her to a no kill shelter or if you can't find one the SPCA. I wish that all people would be responsible for their animals!

There is a program here where they catch the feral cat colonies, spay/neuter them, put them in a database, and return them back to the wild. If you have a colony that you're trying to take care of on your property, you can get free food and supplies from the county. They snip a corner of their ear to show that they are sterilized. I read that once a cat has gone feral, it's next to impossible to expect them to act as a pet. The kittens are another story. They can definitely be adopted back out as pets. It's very sweet of your mom to take care of them. I hope everything works out OK.

They do the same thing here. She should contact the vet and they will probably know who she can call. I agree that a recue will probably try to get the kittens adopted. As a kid, I used to rescue every kitten I could find and hide them in my basement. My Mom always thought she was hearing babies crying.
