Toe surgery

My little Barney has done something to his front paw that has caused a limp for about two weeks. Vet had him on antibiotic/pain med or this time but he is limping more and yet he never shows pain. Dr. Found one nail the end nail on the inside f foot that is limp and turned to the side. He feels the pad to that nail is swollen and has scheduled him for surgery to remove it back to the joint. I am very nervous about this. I guess he wll X-ray before but he thinks there might be tumor. Anyone ever seen this before? Elaine

I am so sorry that Barney is having a problem. I would definitely have an x-ray done and have the vet explain the results before any surgery. If there is an orthopedic specialist in your area it might be a good idea to get a second opinion. Sending healing prayers.

The few times I needed help with one of my little ones I have turned to this site and wish I had time to spend here. I thank you all for your input and I have an appt. Mon. with another Vet for his opinion but I cannot locate a specialist in this area. Afraid the new Vet won't be able to help much without an xray but we'll see. Have call in to my Vet with my questions also even though we spent long time discussing this I come away later with more questions. This is a very expensive surgery even though it doesn't sound like it, over a thousand dollars so being Mom to two dogs and very elderly and trying to get by I have to try and be smart about what I do. Will touch back here as I get infor. Thanks so very much to all of you. Thought I had photos but guess I messed up when I did that....

I would never do any surgical procedure without seeing the problem on an x-ray and given a complete explanation of what will be done. I'm extremely concerned that the vet did not even x-ray his paw and wants to do surgery!!! I would ask the new vet to do an x-ray since it will be needed to diagnosis the problem. Hope you update us on your little guy...

Barney's Toe Surgery

Good News, I first of all canceled the surgery as I was so uncomfortable with not knowing why no xrays were done. Then I had an appointment with another Dr. this AM who did a thorough inspection, didn't see anything that looked like a problem with his toe or pad and took x rays of both paws with different views. His opinion was that it looked like there was a problem with the wrist but wanted the radiologist to check them and then had the specialist at the surgery hospital look. Said there was a torn tendon at the wrist and it was swelling, which my Dr. and I both saw on the xray also. Suggest that we do a steroid shot and splint for a couple of weeks and then recheck. If surgery were to be necessary, it would be rather easy to go in and release the tendon causing the problem. I am so happy with this news and knowing that Barney will not be having surgery for no reason. I will not be going back to my old Vet as this is the second time we scheduled surgery when it wasn't necessary. Thanks for all your support, I really do appreciate your input.

Yay! I was thinking of Barney and wondering how the appt went. That's great news your little guy probably doesn't need surgery. So glad Barney didn't have to go through an unnecessary surgical procedure. I'm glad you found a great vet who did a complete exam and consulted with a specialist. Always better to go the conservative route before any surgery. Hope Barney heals well!

Well that is a little scary hearing that Barney could have been put through surgery for no reason. To tell you he may have had a tumor was also a stressful thing to tell you without knowing for sure. Glad you are seeing someone else. Very happy Barney will be fine.

It's pretty scary knowing the vet wanted to do two unnecessary surgeries!
