Feeling like a failure

Our two little darlings - Hazel and Sophie are almost 3 years old. However, we have yet to get them to sleep through the night and usually they want to go out two or three times. During they day this is less of an issue, but we still find poop accidents even after a just a few hours when left alone. Not sure where we went wrong as we have house trained several other dogs successfully in the past. We have tried crating them - they will go in the crate - a bell - they use it to wake us up multiple times a night - We have tried taking them for walks in the evening, but it doesn't seem to help. Anyone have any suggestions?

Dogs that age should not have to go out during the night to potty. If you have ruled out a medical reason for this I would go back to basic crate training again. Make sure the crates are not too big. Just room enough to lie down and turn around. They should not want to potty where they are sleeping. If they have not pottied outside I would confine to the crate and try again in a while. During the night it must be all business, then back to bed. Stretch out the time between going out to teach them to hold it all night.

I agree with Molly and I would add, don't free feed and don't feed after 3pm. And I also would go back to how you train a puppy and that is to pick a reasonable time for you to put them to bed and not allow them out. For instance I'd start out with putting them to bed at midnight and waking up and letting them out at 5 am. If they are clean and sleep through that, then extend it either way by 1 hour. 11pm - 5 am or 12 midnight - 6am. You get the idea.

Not sure what you meant by bell. They shouldn't have access to a bell in their crates. But bottom line, if you pull up their food early and walk them sufficiently and shorten the time, you may have to listen to them cry or bark a few nights before they know you mean business.
