Do you usually buy the same breed?

My parents almost always bought boxers. I have a sister who always gets American Eskimos. Several relatives always get Golden Retrievers. I have had several breeds, pure and mixed.

Do you usually get the same breed, or what other factors influence which dog you will bring home?

Jeff

I have never had the same breed. Our last dog was my favorite, he was a Bearded Collie. This time I wanted a similar look and personality in a smaller package. That is a tall order. Oliver, our Havanese, was chosen after a lot of researching into breeds and finally breeders. He does not disappoint. He is a wonderful companion in every way. Lucky because I had never heard of this breed before this. Oh and by the way I would have another Havanese in a heartbeat.

I loved corgis and had one as my first dog (a condition of my marrying my husband since my family never had dogs and I always wanted one.). After Basil contracted Lyme disease and passed, we had: a beagle, a standard poodle, a minature poodle and most recently another corgi. Polly was diagnosed with Addison's disease a year and a half ago and we lost her that Christmas. I would have had another corgi in a heartbeat, but I'm married to Felix Unger and corgis are heavy shedders. I also did a lot of research and absolutely love Baci, our 14 week old Havanese. He's the first dog I've had that I've seriously considered getting another. I was always a one dog at a time person till now.

My previous dog was a Bichon. I was so heartbroken after she died that I did not want to get another dog that looked exactly like her, even though I loved the breed. After researching other non-shedding breeds I found the Havanese. It turned out to be a perfect fit for us!

I have wondered about this too. I was afraid if a new dog looked too much like a past dog, I would miss the old dog when I looked at the new dog. I have always gotten different breeds. I go by what I clique with at the time. But that was when I was buying at pet stores. Now that I know pet stores are a no-no, I will have to make a deliberate decision about a breed before selecting a breeder. Which is what we did this time. We did research, decided on a Havanese, then looked for a Havanese breeder. And we have been VERY pleased with the results!

PS Sometimes when it is dark and I am holding Benjy, or he snuggles against me in bed, I, for a second, will think he is my last dog Abby. When we got Benjy, it bugged my wife when I accidentally called Benjy by a previoius dog's name. Jeff

Willow is the third dog that I have had as an adult. We had all sorts of strays when I was growing up. The first dog I owned on my own was a lab. The dog was a real knothead. We probably should not have owned a dog at that time as we had to keep him tied up while we were at work. We were young and dumb. Anyway, that dog and our neighbor's lab both disappeared at the same time. We think they were stolen. Then we adopted a mutt from the shelter. Bonnie was probably part hound of some sort. Had her for 12-14 years until she failed and we had to grant her peace. My dog prior Willow was my heart dog. She was a Pembroke corgi and I loved her with all my heart and sole. I lost her in February to degenerative myelopathy. After caring for her and having to constantly lift and carry her for a year or so, I knew my next dog needed to weigh much less. I swore I would always have a corgi, but I knew if I had to care for another 30 lb. dog like I did Foxy, it would be harder as I got older. So, after researching I settled on a havanese. A bonus is the very light shedding which is so nice as I don't have to shave my clothes like I did with Foxy! I really was torn between miniature schnauzers and cavaliers, also. But I have seen some pretty yappy schnauzers, and cavaliers seem to have some pretty significant health issues. So, here I am with Willow and couldn't be happier.

Growing up, I had boxers, a basset hound, a chihuahua, and as an adult I've had shih-tzus, and a shih-tzu/Japanese chin mix. Now, we have two Havanese boys. I love all dogs. I love cats, too. I've had a variety of those too. :-)
