After purchasing the insurance this year, I am very distressed to discover that they do not pay for a regular vet visit UNLIESS the vet finds something wrong with your dog and performs a procedure accordingly.
For example: one morning, while playing in the park, Ellie started shrieking in pain and could put no weight on one paw. Although there were many owners around, no one had seen anything happen and no one could see an injury.
After about 1/2 hour of this I took her to the vet. The vet examined her from head to toe, testing the movement of every muscle, ligament, joint etc. The vet felt Ellie was alright and must have just sprained something that was already healing. She saw no need to take x-rays at that point.
The bill, approx $85, was denied by TruPanion because in the end, there was nothing wrong and the vet didn't "do" anything.
