hi all,

my puppy has finally had his last set of shots, so we're looking for other small breed puppies to play with. does anyone know of just havanese play dates or small dog play dates in the san jose area?

many thanx,

joyce

There was a group going a few years ago, but it gradually dissolved. There are plenty of Hav owners in that area (and a couple are here), so if you can just meet up with one or two and set a date and publicize it here with the words "San Jose & those close" (or something like that), you'll probably get a pretty good response.

Come join us over at the SF Bay Area Social Group. I just sent you an invitation. If we all post the general area where we live, we can find those closest to us easily. http://havaneseforum.com/group.php?groupid=1

Welcome to the forum! I actually just started a group on Meetup a few weeks ago (www.meetup.com/SFHavanese). We meet a couple of times a month, but we rotate our meetup locations because our members come from all over the Bay Area. We expect to have a South Bay/Peninsula meetup coming up in October (still finalizing all the details). We also have a playdate planned for this Sunday but it's up in SF. (I can send you the details if you want.) By the way--nearly a third of our Havs are under one year old, so there should always be lots of opportunity for your little guy to engage in some good old Havanese puppy play at any of our meetups!

thanx kimberly and tracy! kimberly, i accepted your invitation. and tracy, i think i'll wait for the south bay meetup -- SF is a bit far for us to go these days -- with the cost of gas (and me being out of work) and all.

we've taken our puppy to puppy kindergarten classes, but he didn't really care for it too much -- there were a lot of large puppy breeds there and the one little dog (a westie) is really barky and tried to bite him, so he just stayed close to me. i want him to be socialized with people and dogs, so it will be nice to get him around some other havs.

again, thank you both for your responses. i look forward to meeting the both of you at one of the meetups.

I'd encourage you to keep him in that puppy kindergarten class, but maybe keep him far from the Westie if you can. It is good to expose him to larger dogs and a variety of breeds. He may be unsure of the dogs/setting, but he'll figure it out. Don't baby him if he seems fearful. Remind him he's a brave puppy. LOL

I could not agree more with what Kimberly said: Keep up the puppy kindergarden! The pups may seem mis-matched, but they all still have “puppy jaws” meaning that they can’t bite down as hard as adult dogs can. It will give your pup an opportunity to learn how to safely interact with bigger and/or more assertive dogs...including learning when and how he should tell them to “back off!” These are all important skills in doggie life! (BTW--It's normal for a pup to hide behind your legs for the first couple of these. Give him time to come out of his shell.)

That said, you can also check out a few other things in addition. I have heard that there is a supervised small-dog-only play session every Saturday morning at the Peninsula Humane Society in San Mateo. (NOTE: I've never been, so can't say what it's like.) If that’s still too far for you, then check out Meetup.com’s “find a meetup group” tool. You get to type in a variety of keywords like “puppy play,” “puppy socialization,” or even just “small dogs” and see if there are any appropriate meetup groups near your zip code. Then, just join any that seem like a fit (and our Havanese group, of course! ) and go to a meetup to see how you like it.

Tracy

P.S.: I echo Marcia’s request: Anyone reading this…please let us know if you can think of any stellar South Bay or East Bay places for a Havie playdate! We are always on the lookout for good venues!

I just found a great spot in the East Bay in Union City. It is on the corner of 7th Street and Mission Blvd. It is a totally enclosed (fenced) dog park with a double fenced entrance. The small dog park is pretty small, but reasonably sized and has some agility equipment set up in there. I believe the park is closed on Mondays for maintenance, but it is pretty nice. I was impressed with it. I am not positive, but I think the name of it is something like Digon Park.

Kimberly:

Thank you! One of our members (also on the Forum) mentioned the same park recently. Glad to hear that you liked it, too. Hmm…something tells me that there’s a good chance we may be having one of our future meetups there!
