Ice - good or bad for Havadoggies?

Ricky LOVES to munch on ice. My dentist tells me that humans should not eat ice because ice has a higher "specific gravity" (hardness) than enamel on human teeth. There is a real possibility that a person can crack the enamel on their teeth. I presume that dogs have a harder enamel on teeth than humans, because they are true carnivores, but I just don't know.

Do you let your doggies eat ice?

No. We used to occasionally give an ice cube to our huskies. It never caused any problems, but we stopped after being told wasn't good for their teeth. Our vet said no to any type of hard chews for Nickie. He has never been much for chewing hard items. Even as a puppy, we didn't have problems with him chewing on hard items.

I knew it was bad for them but I have to admit I give Sophie a very thin ice cube with a blueberry in it when it's hot out. I just searched and was very sad to see that carrots are bad too! (pasted below)

I get this question many times monthly from owners of my dental patients, especially in hot weather. The short answer is NO, and I’ll explain why.

First, one must consider why this is bad. When a dog chews on anything, he/she uses the upper 4th premolar and the lower 1st molar tooth, both of which have points to them. As pets aggressively chew ice cubes (or anything frozen), dogs have a tendency to chew too hard and the force of breaking the ice is substantial. This leads to a slab fracture (broken tooth) of the upper 4th premolar, which many times exposes the pulp, leading to tremendous oral pain and discomfort. Treatment options are root canal therapy or surgical extraction. Even if the pulp is not exposed, chewing ice can cause the dentin (layer below the enamel) to be exposed, which also causes oral discomfort and pain.

Bottom line…stay away from ice. And while we’re on the subject, stay away from carrots. They can cause the same issues.

Does this mean we should not be letting our dogs have antlers or Himalayan chews?

Dogs are meant to chew, and carrots certainly are not very hard... WE chew them all the time! I give ice cubes to my dogs frequently, but I've never seen them try to chew that... Only lick it. I suppose if they actually were chewing it, I might have to re-think.

But if you don't give dogs things to chew they will find them for themselves, and their choices can be much worse. I once knew a GSD who ground all his teeth to nubs chewing rocks!!! Any rock he could find.

We give Ricky only steamed carrots, which he adores, and they are not hard.

Sassy only gets the dropped ice cubes and she only licks them. After a minute she's no longer interested in it, so I make sure to go behind her to retrieve it or else I'm stepping in a cold puddle . However, she does love to munch on pine cones.

Django has never been a chewer, ever. He would chase the ice cube around the kitchen but never really eat it. No internet in antlers, or any other "chew" type hide. He occasionally chews his toys.

Willow likes pine cones too! She'll shred them apart.
