Talking Max and Molly - Therapy Dogs!!

I am happy to report that Max and Molly both passed their therapy dog evaluation a few weeks ago.

We've made almost a dozen visits to the library's "Children Reading to Dogs" program and a local retirement center. Max and Molly seem to enjoy all the attention and are so gentle and patient with everyone. It has been a truly rewarding experience so far, and we look forward to many, many more visits through the years.

Havanese just seem perfect for therapy work due to their happy personalities, outgoing nature and trainability. Havanese are scarce here in Oklahoma, so it is always fun to "show off" our little pups and educate people on this fantastic breed.

If any of you have a therapy dog, we would love to hear about your experiences. We are finding that therapy dogs are in high demand in our area, so we will always be able to find ways to keep ourselves busy.

Congratulations! I agree that Havanese are an ideal therapy dog, especially visiting older people or children when a bigger dog might be too much.

Our Cody is CGC certified as of a few years ago, but we've never used the certification to visit in schools, hospitals, etc. He loves everyone and is totally trustworthy... but he's deathly afraid of the sound of clanging metal.. which could be an issue in a hospital or school setting. I'm still super proud of him for getting the certification, and way to go to you and your babies for passing the evaluation... and they are so young! You must be a very good trainer...

Congrats to Max and Molly and kudos to you for doing this! I want my Lola to eventually be a therapy dog. We're in CGC class right now, and she's great except for the part when someone else has the leash and I leave...not so great with that She's just a puppy so I have another year or two, but that's my goal.

Cody -- Congratulations on your CGC! That is a great accomplishment!

We took several obedience classes -- beginner, intermediate, canine good citizen, therapy dog -- throughout the year. Every week, we took them to stores that allowed dogs like Lowe's and Home Depot to help them get used to all kinds of people, sounds, shopping carts and equipment. Always had a clicker, treats and lots of praise for being a brave, social and obedient doggie. It worked!!

Lola -- You go girl! I know you will make a great therapy dog one day. You have already accomplished much in your short life.

Thanks!

What a commitment for you to take both dogs (puppies, really) through all the classes!

Cody and I also haunted the stores in our area that would let n us work in them... clicking and treating our way through until my kids would get tired of following us around and insist we leave! I really enjoyed those training times, and I think Cody did too.

Congratulations! They are so beautiful as well! I got a Havanese for that reason but outside of exposing her to everything (she even goes to the bank and went to pay her school taxes, horse farm, Home Depot, rail trail, etc.) I have to find a class that is affordable. You should be so proud!!!
