The Dreaded Flea

Okay, someone out there tell me what to do about fleas. I have had dogs all my life and have dealt with fleas all my life. And there has to be something out there that will rid me of having to deal with them the rest of my life. I have my yard treated, my office treated and of course my house treated on a 3-month schedule. I have been using Frontline on my angel baby Rosie; but she still gets them if she steps anywhere outside of a treated area. She woke me this morning scratching. Yesterday she had her bath and went to the vet--probably got them there or maybe in the garden or maybe from the squirrels in the back five acres that we can't treat. What to do? You would think that with all the brushing that a flea couldn't survive in her coat or hide. Has anyone tried diatomatious earth lightly powdered on the dog. I am afraid to try without someone saying it is okay. Help.

You may want to read this. Some useful tips on how to apply it. Unfortunately I have no experience with it.

Todd's allergic to fleas (one bite has him scratching himself bald) and I've found that the best combination for him is DE (Diatomaceous Earth) in the carpets and Revolution applied to him monthly.
I haven't seen a flea for almost a year now and I only apply DE evey 3-4 months.
AS long as you use food grade DE it's safe to apply directly to your dog and I have used it on Todd before but it dries out his skin..I prefer Revolution

I use a newer pill called Comfortis so I don't have the messy liquid getting in her hair like the advantage & frontline. We also have wooded property with lots of squirrels. I haven't seen a flea on Abby all summer and for south Georgia that is like a miracle.......lol

We use Vectra D and I've never found a flea or a tick on either of my guys.

Thanks for the info. I have some of the DT but haven't tried yet, afraid it will dry out her coat; but may try on the carpet. The vet gave me Comfortis yesterday and will see how that works for a month--don't like putting poison in her though. Just got back from a short ride with her and had to clean up her and the car--still dealing with car sickness. I was hoping that she had out grown it and this was a test drive. she made it do the vet and back yesterday just fine 3 miles one way just one mile over the drive to the office. That was the first time she had made that trip. So today we drove 5 miles and you guessed it. On the fifth mile just as we were getting back to the driveway, she started up-chucking. We were so hoping to take a trip the latter part of October for our 39th anniversary; but what to do?

We recently discovered that we have squirrels living under our deck. So, when the dogs go out on the deck, they are getting fleas. Now we have to bomb under the deck and close up where they got in. I haven't used DE yet, but we did use a spray in the yard.

We had the dogs and cats on Frontline Plus, but had to apply it every 3 wks. Vet switched them to Vectra. They will have their 2nd application of the Vectra today. I wasn't thrilled about the results the first time, but that was before we knew about the squirrels.

Be sure the DE is human food grade! I use it in my house and around the perimiter. We spray beneficial nematodes in the yard. This was a bad year here for fleas. I ended up having to use capstar on them all. Thankfully one pill did the trick. They safe capstar is safe for daily use, but I don't like poisoning them with pills or topical things. Good luck.

I think the fleas are getting resistant to Frontline and may have to switch soon! This makes the 2nd month in a row I've had to treat her early because I've seen a flea on her, I've always caught it in time because she is light colored and I brush her everyday it is easy to spot those suckers and I'm always looking for them (Okay, I'm a tad neurotic about fleas!)

But....I do all of the preventative too, yard, house, Frontline, etc. I keep a box of Capstar on hand that i bought on Amazon and that has been supplementing the Frontline the last two months, the fleas are EVERYWHERE right now (outside of our little slice of property!) Ugh. I see them jump on her on neighborhood walks, it drives me bonkers...but the Capstar DOES work.

Next time we go to the vet, I'm asking about switching to something more effective.

The only problem with the diatamaceous earth (sp?) Is that it takes so long for it to kill them.

Have you tried the frontline spray?

The DE with the nematodes takes about three to five weeks to completely get rid of them all. The capstar will speed that up a bit. I hate fleas!
