Missing Havanese outside of Pittsburgh

My Mom's lovely Havanese, Lacey (7yrs old, 12 lbs), ran after a bunny in our yard and Mom couldn't catch her. She's now been lost since Saturday (3/22). She's an amazingly sweetheart of a dog, and we hope some wonderful person has brought her into their home to keep her safe and warm. We've scoured the neighborhood and posted Lost Dog signs around town and checked every shelter in the area. Please share this so that we can find Lacey and bring her back to her loving home.

Hampton Township, Allegheny County, Western PA

I live about 30 miles north of Hampton, but know people in your area. I will make them aware of this. Is she microchipped? If so, hopefully someone will turn her in to a shelter or vet and they can return her. Do you have a full body photo of her? It is hard to see what she looks like from the avatar photo.

I was going to ask for a status update but looked on Craigslist first and found the listing at http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/pet/4396979604.html

Are you on Facebook, by any chance? Facebook can be a really good tool for finding missing dogs. I would be happy to provide you with links to post Lacey.

This website has some really good tips for recovering a lost dog: http://www.missingpetpartnership.org/recoverytips.php

Here are some tips very several different situations:

Help find Missing Pets or Owners List

QUICK SUMMARY

Local Flyers & Posters are the most important thing to do. If nothing else get flyers up in local businesses.
Create flyer, save and open to print using Adobe on most computers at http://www.petbond.com/flyerentry.php
Also Business Cards are easy to pass out for Lost Pet, Google search deals - http://www.vistaprint.com

Check Animal Control Daily. Make sure to see all pets there even ones in off limit areas. Remember going cage to cage petting, could pass illness. List by state, enter zip and 50 mile for distance - http://www.animalshelter.org/shelters/states.asp

Your loving lost dog may run from you not to you -http://sheltienation.com/2012/11/why-your-lost-dog-may-not-run-back-to-you.html

Contact Local Law Enforcement to File a Report: stolen, lost or found no matter can save a pet. This is so they have your information if pet or owner is found.

Local Vet Offices can be a huge help, email or mail photo with information. Site to locate Veterinarians, animal shelters, animal rescues use description and city, but can enter just state CA, FL etc -http://www.yellowpages.com/

Watch this. Top picture is a helpful slide show - http://www.missingpetpartnership.org/

Search Dogs may help. May seem expensive but keep in mind, searching on your own can really be costly in dollars, time and health, I know. Dogs run off to play and are usually back in an hour or so. If they are not, something maybe wrong - they are stuck, hurt or someone has them. Dogs do not run away from home. If a dog ran out of fear a large dog could be 60+ miles or more from home. When they run out of fear told they will run until they can run no more and hide to rest. It may take month to get home then. Search dogs probably not track a dog that ran of fear unless sighted in an area. But in cases that a dog is believed to have ran off to play, think there is a good chance. Pets can easily get stuck places and need help out. In those cases scent search dogs can be a great asset to getting pet to safety.

Lost in Car Accident: Pets will often return to the scene of the accident after they have had a chance to settle down from the fright. Try to keep food and water there for them and something that smells like home. Traps can be very helpful to recover pets from accident. Usually a trap can be borrowed from AC or local rescue. http://www.trucatchtraps.com/how-to

Stolen Pet Reminder: Say MISSING or LOST, Not Stolen. REASON: People do not want involved in crimes. No reason to fear that, as legally little to nothing would be done. Stolen pets seldom remain with thieves for long, Pets are usually sold or dumped within a few hours. Who has your pet is probably a good person who also fell victim to deceit. They probably think they saved the pet, and they really did. Thieves are clever, it is there job. *** Exception, okay to say stolen if there is News Coverage with plea for Safe Return. "Please if any one bought or found them help get them home safe." *** Also consider your pet may have gotten away and be running scared. You want people to want to help not to be afraid to get involved. Saying stolen can put your pet in greater danger. A good person could dump the pet because they are afraid of legal trouble. Reality is nothing would be done. Hope they just take the pet to a local vet if they are afraid and just say they found it. Please for the safety of your pet say Missing or Lost. *Other than above note, this article has helpful info -http://www.doggiemanners.com/art_finding_stolen_dogs.html

Hire a private investigator if you think someone stole your pet. Case following that worked. http://tinyurl.com/8hzujj6 I have looked into PI's before. It can be very costly. So if it is not affordable, need to learn to be your own. Read this - case is like a movie script, she even had billboards across the city.

PETS FOUND need to find owner or home. *Ref above notes to find owners of found pets:
1.) get flyers out.
2.) Notify and list with Shelters.
4.) File report with local police.
5). Send picture and info to local vets.
6.) List on top places to post.

*Vets normally scan for chips free. If no chip Please Withhold some Detail so you can Verify Real Owner.
*Local vets often will agree to serve as a contact.
*Help Always Needed, if pet is found in your area. Print and help get flyers out local. There are still many elderly not on the internet. These pets are their world and they have no idea how to find them.
*Ref. -http://www.missingpetpartnership.org/recovery-stray.php
*Most of the time dogs that are found need claimed or homes immediately to avoid going to a shelter. Shelters are full and kill often, so pets have only days to get out and sadly many times not even that. Please try to find a rescue first. Post here and Google search your area and contact all you can for help. If they are in a shelter please make sure location is posted, Thanks

Thanks everyone for helping them to safety. Know they appreciate all help.

Reminder: LOST PETS PLEASE POST: City, State or Country, Pets Description and Contact Phone Number or Email. Option like a vet drop off address and number is okay. Not everyone has internet smart phones etc.
Please DO NOT ASSUME a collar or chip is contact enough. Many times collars come off or are removed and chips can fail. Please post picture with info and flyer with info locals can print to share to help. For the sake of your pet, please post info needed to get them somewhere safe. Thanks
