Shots

I was wondering what people's experience or thoughts are about when to get the first rabies shot?

Our vet said anytime but I remember our others got theirs at 6 months.

Thanks

Hugs, Jade, Harley, April and John. In our hearts, Kona

It really depends on your state laws, unfortunately. I don't think ANY state allows you to go later than 6 months, so for those of us in those states, that's what we do. There are some states that require it at 4 or 5 months, and for people in those states, your really have to take your chances and do it then. But, where ever you live, you want to wait as long as you are allowed by law.

Many of us on this forum follow Dr. Jean Dodds' vaccine protocol:

2016 Dodds Vaccination Protocol for Dogs

20 weeks or older, if allowable by law
Rabies – give 3-4 weeks apart from other vaccines
Mercury-free (thimerosol-free, TF)

Jeanne and Emmie

I would also have the vet give the Thimerosal-free, (mercury free.) My vet had to order it specially.

Hi all! I'm trying to figure out Bowie's first rabies shot...his vet gives Zoetis is that ok? I also have heard of Merial t-free. I'm able to get just the Zoetis shot without an exam at Bowie's vet, but would have to register as a new client, pay for an exam in order to get the t-free shot. Any thoughts?

Not sure. My vet uses the Merial t-free anyway. I don't really understand why you would need to re-register to get that version. I do understand that the vet requires an exam before giving a rabies shot. It is a vaccine that is not without eisk, and it makes sense to only give it to a healthy animal.

Sorry! I wasn't clear...I would have to register and pay for an exam with the new (t-free) vet. Or just go to Bowie's regular vet and pay for the other type of rabies shot, no exam needed. His vet would have a buy a flat of the t-free in order to use for Bowie...

Honestly, I would be questioning everything with the first vet, and bet I'd have to be fighting with them all the time over titers and minimal vaccination. I'd switch vets to someone who understands the dangers of over-vaccination.

Absolutely worth going to the new vet that will use the better Thimerosal-free rabies. It could be a whole lot cheaper in the long run, too, because of the health benefits.
