Exercise pens

Hi I want to have your opinion on exercise pens. My dog Buchiki is 6 months old and doing good. It stays in crate all the day and I let him out when I come home. As expected, it does not have any accidents in the crate however there were accidents in the apartment once in awhile especially if it is hanging around outside more than 3 hours.

The reason I am thinking about exercise pens is to let it have more space compared to a crate as it is staying in it almost 16 hours a day. But I am worried if it is going to have a bad effect on potty training because I heard the bigger the crate the more tendency for the dogs to go to a corner and pee instead of holding. I can put a pea pad in the corner but I'm still confused if it is going to have a long-term bad effect on potty training.

So I just want to pitch it out hear and listen to you guys thoughts

Thanks.

Are you saying that Buchiki stays in a crate for like an 8 hour work day? That seems like a very long time for a 6 month old pup to go without "going". I never leave Oreo (5 months old) more than 3, maybe 4 hours at the most. From what I had read, I expected him to get to the point that he might be able to make it 5-6 hours as an adult. At about 14 weeks, I started leaving him in a 3x3 playpen when I had to leave the house, and just used the crate at night. He hasn't had an accident in his pen, but again, I only leave him about 3 hours at a time. Oreo won't use a pee pad, just chews it, and we have tried the Pet Loo, and he just lays on it, so I just make sure someone will be able to get home to let him out. Good luck finding a solution that works for both of you!

I am doing the same thing as Hava Novice. My pup is 5 months old. His crate is inside of an exercise area I made with gates. I put him in the crate, let him out to go potty after about 2-3 hours, let him play free with my supervision, then put him back in the excersice pen with crate door open. He has never gone in this area. I wonder if I should lengthen the time, wondering if it is good to get them used to holding it. I read somewhere that they can hold it for 1 hour for each month of age plus one.

Thanks guys for your input.
I take my pup every 4 hours like at lunch. Evenings, it will be out almost all time. At nights it can hold almost like 8 hours. So overall it stays in crate for 16 hours.
I guess I will get the pen now and leave it there along with crate.
