More questions....

Hello....once again I would apperciate input from those who have been there on a few puppy questions

1. Ella's hair is always in her eyes right now. I comb her at least once a day but her face just messes up so fast. I've considered having it trimmed, but read here that it's best to let it grow under her eyes to help with tear staining. She has some...but not bad. Is there a product or something I can use or do to help keep her hair out of her eyes while it grows out?

2. When did you switch from puppy formula food to adult? She's still little....will be 16 weeks tomorrow, but I've been researching information on food. She is eating Wellness Core puppy dry food mixed with Wellness Core air dried and one Stewarts freeze dried liver piece crushed up....all mixed with some water. She loves this and licks the bowl clean. She is very picky.... this is what I came up with as I didn't want to waste a big bag of Wellness Core....

3. Is freeze dried raw the same as raw?

4. When you feed raw do you also use some sort of supplements..... sorry I'm a little confused about the feeding raw but trying to research and figure out what to feed Ella when we switch off puppy food.

5. I always carry Ella outside.... we go out through the garage then to her potty spot. Should I be letting her walk now that she's a bit older? I know she understands that I want her to potty when get outside but I'm certain that she doesn't understand that she shouldn't go inside. We've had few accidents but I know that's because I don't give her the opportunity.....She doesn't get the freedom even to walk out of her crate until she's pottied outside. How long should I continue this?

Thank you all so much....this forum has been a true source of help for us!

1. I put a salve that I purchased to hold back the hair. My pup is 6 months old boy. I am trying to avoid cutting the hair because I want it to grow and go back and down. It is kinda like growing out bangs.
3. Freeze dried is not the same as raw.
5. You might want to try putting her on leash and walking her to the door to go outside. That way she connects the leash, walking to the DOOR, and going outside.

How old is she?

1. We used an all natural unscented lip balm to keep Nino's hair out of his eyes until it was long enough for a top knot.
2. Nino was only on puppy food until 6 months. Typically puppy formulas and all life stages formulas vary mostly in fat content. Nino had no issues with the transition. Just shoot for an AAFCO statement that says "all life stages" rather than "maintenance".
3. Depends. Freeze-dried raw will be raw (Stella and Chewy's, Primal, Nature's Variety), but often times the formulas differ. There are a few treats/foods that are freeze dried but NOT raw, so look for the word raw.
4. If you are feeding commercial raw, it should already be nutritionally balanced. No supplements needed that you wouldn't already give with food. Both of mine get pro-biotics, and Mario gets a joint supplement.
5. I would say let her walk so that the connection is a little stronger UNLESS she really has to go asap. Only give additional freedom if she has been accident free for at least 2 weeks, increasing it small bit by small bit. If you give her more freedom and she suddenly starts having accidents again, reduce the freedom.

Sophie, Mario, and Nino.

I want to preface all my answers below with IN MY OPINION. Only you can decide what is best for your dog.

1. You want to prevent eye hair from poking into the eyes. I don't want Ricky to have bows in his hair so I trim the hair around his eyes on a frequent basis.

2. I never fed Ricky "puppy food." I think that "puppy food" is a marketing ploy. I think you should switch to adult food when you think appropriate.

3. No, freeze dried is not the same as raw

4. I don't know because I don't feed raw. For my circumstances and my dog, a raw diet is not a viable alternative. I feed Honest Kitchen dehydrated.

5. I would put Ella on a leash and walk her outside every one to two hours until she understands what is expected of her.

Enjoy Ella!

ditto .on the puppy food . Freeze dried can be considered raw if no heat was used in the process. It's not the same as fresh /frozen raw, but next best thing. Safer too. Suppliments can be used with any form of feeding and they depend on what your feeding also. No need to carry your dog. You'll know when she is housetrained.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my questions! Sorry I haven't responded til now! The holiday busy schedule has begun! I've started putting Ella's leash on her inside and walking her out. I think she maybe making some connections. She still doesn't go to the door or alert me to her needing to's still me that's trained. Good news is we only have an accident about once every 12-13 days. Not able to hit that two week mark.

As far as my food questions..... I am switching Ella to Natures Variety Intinct raw boost. She just started this so I'm just giving it to her a little bit mixed with the wellness. When I let her try it she seemed to like it far so good. Thank you again!

I'll try to post a new pic of Ella sporting her top knot.... if you can even call it that soon! I love the lip balm to tame hair idea and will be giving that a try soon too!
