Mayzie's Christmas present to me...

...was that she is finally, FINALLY completely housebroken. About a week before Christmas (Christmas being her 7-month birthday, a bit over 4 of those months living with me), it seemed to click "Aha, I stand by the back door when I need to go, and if I just wait there, they'll let me out". Fortunately, she prefers being inside so she doesn't ask to go outside just to play. She also learned 'play dead', 'drop', and 'don't you dare get that yarn', but as I've said before, I would trade every single trick in the book for dependable housebreaking!

I am posting this to encourage anyone who may be having trouble housebreaking without using potty pads! I was determined to stick with it no matter how long it took (and boy did it take a long time, longer than any other dog I've ever had) because I knew it would pay off for years to come. Now all I have to do is keep her healthy and strong so I can enjoy the fruits of all that labor!

Next step...spaying!

I spend my days chasing Mayzie 'n planting daisies! What a blessed life!

Congratulations! Your hard work will be worth it in the long run! I just went back and read one of your old posts about potty training and trick training. I would be interested in seeing an updated video of your tricks. Before we got Shama, I got a book of 101 dog tricks thinking I would cruise through them with my dog, but we are not very far. I still would like to do better at loose leash walking and coming when called (which she does great at obedience class but terribly within our house). I would also like her to bring her toy back to me after I throw it for her (if I offer a treat for the toy, she loses interest in the toy entirely . . .) She's super smart, so I know we still have great potential as a team. I admire those of you who are checking off trick after trick . . .

I love the excuse to post a video, lol! Mayzie's coat is still raggedy and weird from the mange trims, and my Christmas decorations will still be up in the background, but I will make a video anyway!

I am sure a book would give a much more logical way to teach tricks progressively. For example, it may say to first teach "down" so you can build on that and teach "crawl". Plus, there is probably a specific way that "sit" would be judged at an obedience trial or something. But I'm pretty simple...I mostly just reward things she does naturally and give it a name. She loves food, so I would throw it in a box and say, "IN!"...she'd go after it, and she learned "in". Same with "over" and "through" (which, BTW, aren't good tricks to teach if you are going to do agility or obedience because it is bad for their joints). As for the things you mention - loose-leash walking and coming when called - nope. She would run away in a heartbeat, and only comes about 50% of the time when she sees my hand gestures for it.

I am looking forward to going to classes with Mayzie soon. I would love to see videos of the things you do there too!

My dog is 6 months and we are working on outside only too. Your post very encouraging and thank you! He is really good with #1, but #2 he does 50% outside. So......I will hang in there knowing there is hope.

I am glad Mayzie gave you some hope! Hang in there!! They are smart little doggies, and I know they can get it if we just stick with it!
