Wont Sleep in Crate

hi

3rd week home with enzo now, and he sure is a handful!

we have an ex-pen setup with his crate inside. the crate has a towel, and a nicy plush toy he had from the breeder and a blanket over the top.

he goes in there from time to time, hangs out with a toy and plays, or a chew stick, and knows its his safe place.

however, even a lot of nights we are noticing, we wont sleep there. he does sometimes, but most of the time, he sleeps by the side of the pen, and now his new spot, next to crate, next to his wee wee pad (which he's also begun to lie on a lot, which means more wiping down since hes lying in his own pee)

im sure he will sleep wherever he wants and is comfortable, but curious if there is something up? or we need to do something different? the crate door is always open for now (we haven't begun to crate train, just yet) with the crate so cozy for him, im surprised he wont sleep in it much. tonight we did re-arrange the pen and crate so when he's in the crate he can see out to the living room, and see us as well, as before the back of the crate was facing out, and he was facing the wall. I think the rearranging so he can see better was a good idea. I'll let the experts give you ideas, but I have a feeling they'll say to start crate training now unless you always plan to have an indoor pottying option . . . They'll probably also mention getting the DVD Crate Games. I keep meaning to get it . . . Good luck, and keep the photos coming!

Thanks! Yeah, I was thinking after writing this that maybe once we start the crate training he will be more inclined to go in there and sleep more!

thanks!

I would move the pee pad away from the crate. This way if he chooses to sleep outside the crate he won't be right next to or on the pad. You could also try a dog bed instead of the crate. Most dogs like the den-like atmosphere of the crate but maybe he doesn't. I would also be sure that you start closing him in the crate from time to time. It will be helpful to you in the future for him to be ok with that. Good luck!

Move pee pad to far corner from the crate. The close proximity of his sleeping area and his toilet could be confusing.

yeah. am a bit unsatisfied with the current setup. prior, the pen was a bit bigger and it was easy to have them very far apart.

but with wanting to have the crate turned so he can see out into the house while in it, and not looking at the wall like before, it makes the pen area smaller.

and now he also sits on the wee wee pads a lot.

might just need to get a new pen setup, with interchangeable panels
