Puppy sleeping on ugodog?

Hi all. Our little guy came home yesterday at 9 weeks old, and he is wonderful (of course!). We have a Richell expandable pen with a ugodog on one end and a small carrier/crate on the other. The pen is only open wide enough to have a water bowl between the carrier and the ugodog.

The breeder had him knowing paper = potty. So if we put him on the ugodog with a piece of paper on top, he knows what to do. He's not yet seeking it out when outside of the pen, though. I imagine this is because she would watch for his signs and then put paper on the floor nearby, and he would hop on it to do his thing. I'm hoping this is a great sign that he will figure this out quickly, though.

He has only had a couple of pee accidents that were our fault, and he has used the ugodog every time he needed to poop (those signals are more obvious).

We are closing his carrier for short periods of time, then putting him on the ugodog and saying "go potty" first thing when he's out. If he's playing in the slightly larger area we have fenced off, and we see him sniffing, we put him on the ugodog and say "go potty". We do lots of cheering and celebrating when he does. It's most of the time, hooray.

The problem is if he is hanging out in the pen but not confined to the carrier, he will often lounge/sleep on the fresh, clean paper on top of the ugodog. I don't want to encourage this because he will be in the pen when we're at work, and I don't want him laying on his waste. I hope he wouldn't if it was dirty, but I don't want to find out, either way. And we also want him to have an understanding of toilet vs lounge area in his little mini apartment.

We are planning to slowly decrease the paper coverage on the ugodog until there is no paper on it at all.

Right now, we are just picking him up when we see him on the ugodog and putting him in his carrier and shutting the door. Is that the best approach? Or should we just give up on the carrier idea and get him a more loungy bed? He seems to be the type who likes to sprawl vs curl up, if that makes a difference.

Not sure what "carrier" you are using, but he may be too warm in there to be comfortable "lounging", and the area is SO small, her really has no other choices, from what I can see.

Can't help you but you sure have a cutie. Love the coloring. Do you have a little bed in the pen for him to use? As Karen stated, it is hard to see the space provided from the photo.

I have to just chime in to say your little guy is so cute! His stretching out on his potty pad to sleep is adorable, although I totally understand you don't want him to do it!!!

I also don't have any advice to give on the expen configurations since I didn't use one (have a small bathroom with a gate across that we used for confinement when we are out of house with bed, potty pad, lounging/play area, and food areas all well separated) so hopefully others who use the expen can give you more advice on size of areas needed and configurations. But he is adorable!!!

If I had to guess, I would say the ugopad is more comfortable temperature-wise than your floor. Newspapers are a great insulator from heat and cold. Our dogs always avoided synthetic fabric and aimed for cotton, wool, or anything that "breathes". I bought Tux a natural feather pillow with 100% cotton cover and pillowcase. I also found an old cotton sheet that he could wad up and make his own bed/nest. On warmer nights and days, he opts for the hard stone cool floor. Everything is washable. Give him some choices, pay attention to the house floor temperature, and watch what he gravitates to given the options. You can go from there. Dog beds are typically all synthetic and my dogs almost never stayed for long in those.

Thanks, all! For the advice and for noting his cuteness.

We thought it might just be because of the newspaper. So we've taken that out. You can see the results below. We've also tried two different cushions (flat-ish ones meant to go in crates) in lieu of the carrier. He sleeps on both cushions too, but he still likes to lay on the ugodog. He just loves to "splat," as we call it, anywhere. Just like in the sleeping pic above. He does this on the floor, bed, laps...

And for what it's worth, we are in chilly Michigan in a 100 year old house, so not warm on either count. I don't think it's a cooldown thing.

I just can't tell if this is a problem or not. He doesn't use his bed as a toilet, and he carries toys to that corner of the pen, so I think he gets that part just fine. He's really good at using the ugodog exclusively when in the pen. We give him treats on his bed, and we move him to it when we see him lounging. So maybe it's not worth fighting?

We did get a litter box to try if we need to, if he shouldn't be doing this. I do think he will try to eat the pellets though based on how he's snarfed a few that have rolled out when filling up the tray. So we'll have a whole new problem to work through. The joy of puppies!

It's only "problem" if it's a problem to YOU! But, honestly, I don't see a solution that doesn't include a pen with much more room (so more choices) in terms of where to sleep.

I would NOT use an uncovered litter box for two reasons. First, from what I've seen, dogs are MORE likely to lie in the litter than they re to lie on a grid. Second, if he's showing a propensity for eating the pellets, I wouldn't want him to have access to lots. A few here and their won't hurt him in the least, but because they do swell when they get wet, a belly full could be a major problem.

We may expand it another 6-12" so he can lay on the floor if he wants. I just thought it might give him more room for accidents, so I was wary. I also thought about getting the Richell divider, but I really can't foresee that making a difference.
