Learning with Lolly

Hello again! Lolly is such a joy in our lives. She is doing wonderful. However, I have a few questions about her.

First, Lolly LOVES (i really need to stress loves here) shredding paper. This is an all consuming task for her. She finds any piece of paper (or book, magazine, bill about to be paid, etc) and it's gone. She doesn't eat the paper, just shreds it for me. Has anyone heard of this before? I am concerned that she will graduate to eating the paper so I am wondering if I should work on more intently stopping this. But Lolly's tail wags throughout her paper attacks.

Second, and more concerning to me is that Lolly deadheads all the dandelions (or any flowering weed in grass) in my yard, on walks, etc. She is a great weeder (I have a wonderful dog!!!!) but am concerned that she may ingest something she shouldn't (like our neighbors weed spray). Again, she doesn't eat the dandelions, she just deadheads them and moves on. This is her passion when she is outside. (She even ignores my newspaper when delivered outside to go on a weed hunt) She has plenty of chew toys and is rewarded endlessly for chewing on those when outside. Just don't know what to do. Have spent hours learning about which plants are toxic and which are not. Thankfully I live in Wisconsin and wont have to worry much longer about flowers ( that's a first for me...Lolly and I love gardening).

Thanks in advance for any advice. The questions seem so silly but Lolly spends alot of her day as my personal paper shredding service and landscaper.....

Paper shredding is one of the particular delights of this breed. There is nothing unusual about it at all. If I have anything they can get their hands, oops teeth on, it's toast times three. Some of them outgrow it, others not so much. I wouldn't worry about it, other than keeping all important papers way out of their reach.

I can't help you with the dandelions but I'm sure others can.

Rosie tears up my cross-word puzzle pencil at least two times a week. I buy them by the dozen. If I leave the pencil for a second, she gets it and tears off the eraser and the point. I try to be dilligent about putting my pencil up where she can't get to it; but at least twice a week, I forget.

I pretty much broke her from the toilet paper--it just got to be such a problem getting it up. But anything else in the paper way, that she can get is promptly shredded.

You must not have seen other threads about shredding!! These doggies can be shredders. Both of mine enjoy some shredding time with toilet paper and any book they can find.

Gordo will take a napkin from me when I am distracted and has gone through several magazines. When I am filing, I put the ex pen between them and me so they don't get to my papers!

I've had to remove all my books from my coffee tables and have to be diligent about hiding them when I am done reading.

Gordo, my 1/2 havanese is the a bigger shredder than Mimi!

Hi,

I am chuckling about this one. Babaloo recycles his food plate. He didn't eat his kibble from a regular bowl. SO we started to feed him on a paper plate. This seems to work as far as his eating but then he recycles the plate into a toy.

He shreds it.

Our 1st hav, Shadow, was a HUGE shredder. We couldn't leave any type of paper within her reach or we'd have teeny tiny bits all over. We had to either close the bathroom doors or take the TP off the roll and put it up high, very high, because she was also a climber We couldn't just put it on the back of the toilet since she could easily hop on the lid and get it down. All chairs had to be pushed in and end tables had to be cleared nightly, since her 1st "job" every morning was to check to see if we'd been negligent in this duty

Tori, on the other hand, only shreds kleenex that's left within her reach. Thank goodness she's not much of a climber, either.

As for eating dandelions, we don't have them. However, we have many other "tasty" (according to Tori) morsels in our yard We believe Tori is part goat, since she eats many things in the yard (bark, flowers, grass, etc) She has given up the bark eating awhile ago, but continues to eat the grass and my pelargoniums (geraniums). She's almost 3 yrs. old and shows no signs of stopping

This thread gave me a chuckle, since my guys are also avid shredders. But it seems to lessening somewhat. Or maybe we're just more diligent about keeping the shredding material out of reach! Outdoors, Pixie is our part goat, like Tori, as she loves to chew and consume bark, twigs, maple keys, etc. We try to limit the amount of "fiber" in her diet at any one time!

I have to keep my bathroom door closed. Lilly will shred the toilet paper or steel from the trash can. It sounds like we are all better housekeepers as a result of our little shredders.

We had a scary experience a couple of months ago when Lilly got a small stick from outside stuck in her throat. My dh managed to get it out. Ever since then, she seems to only eat grass.
