Vaccinations

From all the posts I've read it sounds like a lot of folks here follow the Dodds vaccination protocol. The breeder told me her puppies will receive their first shots at 8 weeks. Can the protocol still be followed then? Because the next two sets would have to be at 12 and 16 weeks, but the Dodds protocol recommends the final parvo vaccine for the pup be given at 18 weeks (that's the optimal time). Has anyone here run into friction with a vet when asking to use the Dodds recommendations?

I'd find a new vet if they WOULDN'T follow her protocol. This is a vaccine sensitive breed. It's important.

^^Same^^

I had a vet give me pushback 14 years ago with my 1st Hav. I snatched him off the exam table and told her I'd find another vet. The second vet I took him to was 100% on board with the vaccine protocol I requested. You just need to advocate for your dog.

Thanks for you feedback. So can you tell me how many shots your pup had and at what ages?

I'd have to see if I can find his records, he passed away earlier this year. IIRC he had just distemper&parvo for his puppy vaccines at 8-12-16 weeks. Then rabies separately as required by law when he was six months old. He also got vaccinated for bordatella because it was required by his day care.

I just got a new puppy two weeks ago, he is being vaccinated according to Dr.Dodd's protocol which his breeder also followed. His first vaccines were at 9 weeks (distemper and parvo) he'll be getting his second set next week at 14 weeks...If I live that long, I forgot how exhausting puppies can be. I'm chasing around after this one with a crushed left foot! Literally broke my foot with a crush injury two weeks before pick up.

I'm so sorry to hear about your little guy having passed. And that your new chapter is starting off with you hobbled up!! I can't imagine how painful an injury that is.

Thanks so much for the info. I will definitely go with a vet who is on board with the protocol and I'll ask my breeder if she is familiar with it. I do know she WON'T allow the lepto vaccine to be given--it's part of the health contract.
