Vaccinations Part II

So, where I live, all puppy kindergarten classes (man, that sounds too cute...puppy K) require not just parvo and distemper vaccines, but the adenovirus (hepatitis) and parinfluenza vaccines as well. Has anyone had these four given at once? I Think they're given as a combo vaccine. If so, how did your puppy react, if at all? The Dodds vaccination schedule calls for just parvo and distemper to be administered, but I won't be admitted to puppy K with just those two

Have you spoken to them? That's also what my trainer has on paper, but when I spoke to her she was fine with distemper, parvo and rabies (at the right age).

Yes, I asked over the phone which vaccines they require.

Then I would find somewhere else. My dogs' long-term health is more important to me than 6 hours of class time. Anywhere.

MOST puppies will be absolutely fine RIGHT after the combined series. The problem is the long-term health problems associated wither-vaccination. And they creep up on you slowly, over LONG periods of time. I learned my lesson the hard way with Kodi. Read up on vaccinosis. This is not a problem with immediate or short-term reactions. And Havanese are a breed at higher risk than many.

So are adenovirus (hepatitis) and parainfluenza not required vaccines where you are?

As ar as I know, the only LEGALLY required vaccine anywhere in the U.S. is Rabies.

I won't use grooming or boarding or training facilities that require ANY vaccines other than Rabies. My dogs had their initial Parvo and Distemper shots, and have been tiered since. They still all have good titers, including Kodi who is now 8 1/2. Fortunately, most of the training places in New England have serious dog owners who understand the risks of over-vaccination, and titers are fine with them. And NONE require adenovirus or parainfluenza or bordatella.

So your dogs had their 8 week old shots and then have been titered ever since? Or do you mean they had their three rounds of puppy shots and then titering? I've sent an email to my breeder to find out what shots she has given for their first round, at 8 weeks. I know she doesn't do lepto, but I'm not sure about the others. I may have to skip puppy Kindergarten, unfortunately.

We did the first at 8 weeks, (I think... it might have been 9, I can't remember now) then one more. Titers after that. After all three of mine were done and were titering fine, Drs Schultz and Dodds changed their mind because of a new, more virulent form of Parvo. They are now suggesting a 3rd Parvo booster as a puppy, but not a 3rd Distemper.
