Smile Connecticut Havanese

Hi, wondering if anyone can recommend a reputable puppy kindergarten in Connecticut (Hartford area). We won't have our puppy until after Thanksgiving but have excitedly started planning. Also, I am working with a breeder in Connecticut and wondering if anyone else has used a CT breeder. I have lots of questions, texting once a week, but am wondering if that might be too much. Thanks for any input you can provide.

I don't think texting once a week is too much.

Thanks for your feedback Marni. I don't want to cross any boundaries but also want to know as much as I can about the pups. I've seen where some breeders post weekly videos of each pup from birth until their release dates; maybe that's not common practice though.

You breeder should welcome questions, but like all of us, sometimes being slow to respond might mean personal life is crowding in or a litter has complicated life with a slow nurser.

Your choice of a breeder has to be the most important first step.

They should want to answer questions.

I like to see health testing links and pedigrees posted on their sites for breeding pairs. As Karen says, an unsophisticated website doesn't necessarily denote a poor breeder.

Good breeders want their puppy families to be prepared. They won't mind questions. Weekly puppy videos? Not everyone who is a good breeder is tech-savy enough to do that. And raising pippies is a LOT of work, if done well. Most breeders send a FEW pictures as the puppies grow, and also provide some photos of the pups and parents in the packet you pick up with the puppy. But every breeder has a slightly different idea of what is important.

It would not be inappropriate for you to mention to the breeder that you would love to see some puppy photos/videos if you have them. It's normal to be excited about your puppy!

Thanks guys; your responses are appreciated. The breeder I am using is pretty awesome with the puppies and their parents. I love how they are surrounded by everyday activities and noises. Although I wish I had more feedback from her, she has always (eventually) answered my texts. Guess I am just a bit over the top with anticipation and excitement.

You should be over the top with excitement, the Havanese is a magical creature! The first time my adult daughter saw my first Havenese she said, "Mom, that's not a dog, that is an alien creature!" She was referring to the cartoon she loved set in Hawaii where the little girl had an alien friend other people thought was a funny looking dog.

My dogs are little acrobats and they talk (short bursts of sound in different pitches that sound like complicated sentences and an explosive yelp that is pure frustration) and they also, hmmm well, act very much like what they are: dogs. LOL

If you ever have a more enjoyable pet I will be surprised, because even if your puppy isn't a talker, you will almost certainly get a new smiley face around your home.
