New Puppy

Hi All! I introduced myself a while ago before our little package arrived. Now that Patrick has been with us for 2 weeks (he just turned 10 weeks yesterday), I have questions. Patrick is our first Havanese (we had raised two Tibetan Terriers who sadly passed 4 years/6 months ago). Maybe it's simply that I've not had a puppy in many years, however, I don't remember my other dogs getting up twice a night to go to the bathroom. It could be that the Tibetans were bigger than Patrick or the fact that I didn't get them until they were 10 and 12 weeks old (so they had better bladder control). Does anyone out there remember how long it took for their Havenese to sleep through the night? Also, when Patrick gets extra excited he gets very nippy to the point where we have to physically open his mouth to remove his grip on our hands. He starts puppy kindergarten next weekend so we are hoping to get some help.

Here is a picture of our little man.

These are things that time will take care of. Patience is all that matters. My little Zoe woke me up twice for a couple weeks, it was like having a newborn baby and exhausting. Be sure all food and water are taken away three hours before bedtime. The nippy business was solved in our case with bully chews and food stuffed kongs, just swap your hand for something much tastier. You just wait it out. Be on a schedule with bedtime, naps and meals.

Your little one sure is a beauty!

Patrick is so sweet! You must be thrilled.

We've been in the nippy phase and I'm finally starting to see it abate. Still there but so much improved. It was funny because it just seemed to to away (well almost) overnight. Thank goodness. My toes are grateful.

I agree with Marni and think you'll also the nighttime trips mostly disappear over the next week or two. So hang in there! I got Henry at 10 weeks and he mostly slept through the night at that point but maybe every 4-5 days would need a trip out during the night for several more weeks.

Congrats on you new baby, Patrick is gorgeous! He looks so adorable with his Snuggle Puppy. I bought the same one for our new pup. As others are saying hang in there. The sleep deprivation will pass and the scabs covering your hands and ankles will heal and it will all be a distant memory some day, lol.

When he starts biting redirect him to something appropriate, a bully spring or a toy. If he continues to bite, stop all play and interaction put him in his X pen and ignore him for a few minutes. Soon he will learn that the fun ends when he bites. It takes time though.

Can you please post more photos he is freaking adorable :P As for the rest, it will just come with time the nipping will stop when he gets older, you just have to make sure if you don't want him nipping to say OUCH and pull your hands away so he "thinks" he is hurting you that will help some.

We are in the same boat, it has been just about 14 years for me too! I was the youngest person at the breeder’s house on visiting and choosing day though, lol. How hard can it be
