Peeing on pee pad for chicken!

Hey guys...so I guess this may be a "good" problem to have, but the last couple days, we believe Chester is peeing every 10 minutes on his pee pad for his chicken treat!

For his pee pad training, we decided to reward him with a piece of cooked chicken every time he did #1 or #2 on his pee pad. But now it seems like he's the one training us! On the one hand we want to reinforce his successful #1's, on the other we feel like we're being used by this clever lil guy! But it's not like we're not giving him attention when we get home...we're actively playing with him when he just runs off to the pee pad and pees! So that rules out peeing for attention. Now we just think it's just for chicken!

What should I do here?

On a related note, Chester's been accident free for a week now! Even when we were in a rental house in Vermont which was completely carpeted. There IS a light at the end of the tunnel

I would not give him the chicken every time. Give it some of the time and with no particular sequence, so he'll never know which time he'll earn it. Just remember to praise him to the skies every time. Make it a potty party.

I'm so excited for you.

Geri has such a good plan. As they say "Good job" you really do need to taper the rewards now. This has me laughing...these Hav's are smart and I guess clever also.

Dionna does this too We discovered she was doing what we have now have termed "the fake pee pee" just to get her cheerio reward. We praise all pee pees on the paper verbally but only give the cheerio reward for the real thing and not every time. She is 100% potty trained, btw. We thought it was really clever of her to do the fake pee pees LOL!

Thanks guys! Thanks for the advice, Geri! A slight wrinkle to the puzzle is that when we're both at work, Chester does really well with his pee pad....without any treats (we're not there). So when we are home, we want to reinforce with treats since there's no reinforcement when we're at work. In any event, your advice is sound and we'll start weaning him off the chicken slowly.

In the spirit of full disclosure, Chester does have what I call "hello leaks", which is when he leaks out of excitement of seeing us when we get home. But that is slowly going away too since we've only been saying "hi" when he's calm. And whaddaya know...he's starting to learn to be calm when we come home too. Smart lil buggers they are

That's really something completely different. If an older dog keeps doing it, it can be submissive peeing, but MANY young puppies leak a little out of excitement, just because they don't have full sphincter control yet. That kind usually goes away by itself with age, but it's a great idea to teach your puppy to great people calmly anyway!

Gucci did this, too and we thought it was the funniest thing. I Think the fake pee convinced my husband that havs were the smartest dogs on the planet!!

Too cute. I do think treat training is effective but I would mix it up with praise and play-time after awhile so you wean off the treats, especially if they figure out the fake pee, or dime size pee....lol

Dionna also would do the hello pee pees, also out of excitement, when she would meet new people or even often when we would come home. It seemed more frequent when she would meet new people and would get really excited. She loves people and is a very happy dog. This happened more often when she was a puppy; now that she is one year's old it has not been happening much. It only seems to happen when she sees her (human) friend Sarah, the vet tech, who has been with Dionna since 8 weeks. Dionna really loves her and is always so happy to see her and she will often do a little pee pee on the floor.

It is amazing how smart havaneses are.

Dionna goes on the potty pad 100% when we are not home. We still praise her and also give her treats but it is not always treats each time. It did take some time to get to 100% and we had a very brief period where she was having some accidents but now we are back to 100%. She also goes outside when we walk her.
