Diarrhea from New Food

Hi All,

I know this has probably been covered in other threads but the search function on this forum isn't the greatest thing in the world. So if someone knows the proper thread that'll answer my question, please send it along

With that said, Chester was on Biljac when we first got him but our breeder recommended switching to a "better" food once all his teeth came in. After a couple weeks of Biljac, we started mixing in Wellness Puppy kibble which he seemed to like off the bat. After about a week on that with his stool a little bit softer, we decided to up the ante and add a small spoon-full of Wellness wet food. And he LOVES it! But there's one slight problem - DIARRHEA.

I'm guessing we moved forward too fast. Thankfully he's been great with his pee pad so there hasn't been any messes yet. Is the best thing to do to revert back to Biljac + Wellness kibble? Or should we remain consistent and wait it out 'til he starts getting used to the new food he loves?

And to thank you guys in advance, here's a pic of Chester at 4 months

First of all, I've got to say that Chester is quite the cutie! He looks so adorable in his little sweatshirt.

About the food - you're right about maybe going too fast with the transition. It is better to do it over a period of a couple of weeks and just a little of the new food at first and then add gradually. I would wait until he's been on the new food exclusively before even starting to introduce the wet food. Who knows - he may love the kibble all on its own!

See if Chester will go back to just the dry tell he gets used to the change. If it is a lot of Diarrhea it can be more than just the food and you might take a stool sample to the vet.
Look up pumpkin on google and see if that helps loose stools I seem to remember that as a help to the problem.
Chester is sooooooo cute I hope he gets better soon.

He is SO cute!!!!

I always go cautiously when switching food. A minimum of a month for dry food. If he eats the dry stuff, why bother adding wet. I know, I know.. I am a big meanie.

TTFN,
Pam

My newest pup is not a hav, an anatolian but he wouldn't eat his old food, only his new food, (both kibble) and he'd pick out the new food. he had the runs for about 7-10 days, then he was fine.

you can give your dog human digestive enzymes (available at any health food store) and probiotics to help with the runs. My female anatolian (130 lbs) she has always had a sensitive stomach. when I watch a friends dog for a week at my house, she has the runs, when she eats something slightly different she has the runs, you get the picture

anyway, one capsule of both to help your dog digest the new food better will take away the runs. then you can taper it down. Not everyone is a fan of digestive enzymes or probiotics, but I personally think it works miracles. you can pm me for more info.

btw he's super cute!
