Encouraging the chew toy habit?

Next question from my dogstardaily reading: It makes good sense to me that helping your puppy love chew toys would be a huge plus in the long run for times when you need to be away. But I also read somewhere on this forum that most chew toys aren't safe for your dog to use unsupervised, which would seem to defeat the whole purpose. Thoughts??

Also, have any of you followed the advice to only give your new puppy kibble in chew toys and as treats, and not put any in their food dish? If so, for how long did you continue that?

Thank you!!

Dave already talked about the chew toys, so time to talk about kibble. That’s dependent on you, your schedule, and your time. Denver is a distracted eater and thus won’t eat out of a bowl even if offered. So his kibble is fed through training or treat balls. It’s the only way to keep his focus on the food. I also plan on making a snuffle mat. Who knows how long we’ll keep this up. Our last dog was fed with a food ball/treat toy his whole life.

Many dog trainers will say that food in a bowl is also a lost opportunity. Both for bonding and training chances (and mental stimulation). You do have to make sure they still eat the right amount.

We planned on feeding raw, but he couldn’t even stay focused on that to eat an appropriate amount to the point he was losing weight. LOL. So kibble as training treats or in the food ball it is!

Thank you! Putting the food in chewtoys makes good sense to me. I guess its just a matter of taking the time to dole it out each day. I will have to look into the food ball you mentioned. And a snuffle mat, whatever that is

I don't leave Perry with chew toys unsupervised - but he's a monster chewer and rips them apart easily (we even had to change to the black small kong because he was breaking the red one).

I think it helps when you have an idea of how aggressive of a chewer your puppy is, too. What you can safely leave your new puppy, what you can leave with your 9 month old puppy when he’s past the teething stage, and what you leave with a 2 year old, may change. A lot of the warnings are with regard to the chews that expand when they’re wet, so be cautious of food product chews. A kong is an easy place to start, and it encourages him to play and work at something independently, which I did a terrible job of reinforcing.

My son, DIL and granddaughter are now living with us while they build a house. I think my granddaughter has been raised by wolves...

Kodi chews the ends of black Kongs. We can't even have those around here...
