Puppy with a “no chewtoys for 14 days” restriction...

So, we are in landsharking phase.

Denver had surgery today to remove his lower canines (he’s base narrow and ball therapy wasn’t moving them enough). So he’s on a no chewing/tugging restriction for 2 weeks to help heal.

Throwing stuff for him to retrieve only works so well in redirecting when he’s a chewer. He normally takes his bully stick and chews on it before naps (and works great to redirect the sharking).

Any suggestions?

Can’t offer much advice because chews have always been such a great redirection for us, but I feel for you and your little guy! Maybe some kind of working game, like a puzzle toy or hiding treats? Mine also uses a chew to settle down sometimes so I get that need.

He had a lot of fun a Kleenex box yesterday (I turned around for 10 seconds.. oops!), so I have one of those squirrel unstuffing toys on orders. Also some frozen kongs, so hopefully they’ll help a bit.

He’s on soft food for the week too, which rules out a lot as well.

I feel so bad for him.

Mine LOVES the unstuffing toys. I buy the Zippy Paws version, his favorites are the Penguins in the igloo and the strawberry waffles. The squirrels are cute, I know a lot of dogs love them.

But, we always play fetch with them, and he can pull them out so fast now! Whenever I start to pull one out he gets excited and riled up. I should have been smarter about independent play and alternatives to bully sticks. It’s always nice to have lots of options, but it’s easy to stick with the first things that works. In a way it’s a lucky opportunity you have!
