Kojo eats/chews on outdoor plants and sticks

I always supervise Kojo when out in backyard. He grabs leaves and sticks and eats them. He thinks it's a big game to run when I try to take it away. Working on "drop it" command.

Yesterday he wouldn't eat breakfast. About 30 minutes later he is heaving strongly to vomit. He threw up a whole green leaf (blackberry bush leaf) so obviously swallowed it whole.

I had some big trees removed and there are different sizes of wood chips all over yard from stump grinder. He runs to find these and start chewing. Also, replaced privacy fence and Kojo finds pieces of wood from dog-eared pickets that have that green stuff on it.

I am working hard to clean up entire yard of debris from recent work. But there will always be tree and bush leaves on the ground.

Why is he so attracted to eating leaves, sticks, grass and wood chips? Always makes him sick.

Probably because he's still young. Kodi did a lot of that as a youngster. Fortunately, he outgrew most of that nonsense!

Mine is very delicate with leaves, like he wants to collect them. He’ll carry it inside and lay down with it in his mouth, but won’t actually eat it. We had a brief issue with him guarding small rocks and twigs he brought in from outside because my kids would panic and dramatically take them away. It was quickly resolved by teaching them to trade for a treat instead. We didn’t do very well teaching “drop it,” but he does freeze when he hears “no” because we only use it when it’s serious.

Our yard was “puppy proofed” against poisonous plants, and we supervise closely outside, too. We’ve done what we can to control anything that is especially dangerous, but sometimes they’re just so curious when they’re little!

I don’t think he’s tried to chew on a twig since the teething stage passed.
