Nanu Nanugram

I haven't posted in a bit so here is our little one and some updated pictures. First of all he is just a wonderful little dog. We just love him and we are having a great time with him. We have done some traveling with him and we are having a great time. We've been going to his puppy classes. He picks things up very fast and loves to learn. He's not very food motivated so I'm always looking for a training currency he can't resist. As always I love to get any and all thoughts and suggestions from the community.

Nanu gets older he'll get more food motivated. Although, a bit picky Patti was the same way a Nanu's age. You might try boiling a chicken thigh and cut into tiny pieces to see if that works. Or, cook a wienie in the microwave and cut it up into tiny pieces.

Do you have a long, braided fleece toy? You can wiggle it from one end, and it will go back and forth like a snake. Nanu might like chasing that as a training reward.

Yes there are a few toys that may entice him. I'll give some a try. He did very well at his puppy class today. The trick seemed to be that he ran around prior to the class at Petco's puppy playtime. Then, at the class, he was very interested in the training treats including turkey bacon and not as much in the other puppies.

At 4 months he is affectionate but he likes to go his own way. I'm surprised this early on he is rather independent. He doesn't seem to need to hang out or cuddle. Is this typical?

I think it is a wonderful sign that you are raising a confident puppy that loves you but isnít clingy! Thatís perfect! The last thing anyone wants is a Havanese with separation anxiety. It sounds like you are doing a great job with him!

Thank you! At this point I believe we could leave him for a few hours in his ex-pen and he wouldn't even know we were gone. We socialized him and worked a bit but mostly he's a natural. The Breeder deserves a lot of credit.

Aww he’s adorable and it seems like you’re doing awesome. As for food. Interestingly Oliver is an extremely picky eater but he’s motivated by treats because they come with praise! Sometimes he’ll happily do something for a treat and then not even eat it. I think somewhere he figured out that this was a fun trick. And I agree that independence is a good thing! At 4 months he probably has a ton of energy to burn off too. I have videos of ours running in circles at that age

Shama has become more cuddly with age. She only started lying on DH's lap in October (after turning four in June). My lap is the "danger zone," because I groom her there. Yesterday, I sat in DH's spot, however, and she curled up on my lap (ok, fine, I was periodically treating for this behavior ...)
