Thumbs up Thanks To All For The Housbreaking Tips!

Just to let you know I threw out the newspapers Sat. and CoCo (he's 3 mo.) has really been trying. It is a full time job! My husband is not getting much attention but he understands that this is important in order to really enjoy coco later on.

Thanks again,
Lucia

The early stages of potty training will determine how much you enjoy your babies for the rest of their lives. It's well worth it.

Actually I think it's beginning to click. But today it's so windy out he gets distracted and starts chasing leaves. I had him out tonight for about 1 hr. and as soon as we came in he pooped. Oh well, maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

one thing that helped me the most was to use a crate and follow his feeding schedule closely. after he ate, i'd let my guy outside for 15 mins. if he didn't go, i'd put him in the crate for 45 mins. then another 15 mins outside - no go, crate again. when he does go potty outside, that means play afterwards inside. an hour is too long to wait outside. he probably just thinks it's time to play.

the key really is to keep a really, really close eye on him in the house - never unsupervised (if you're busy - it's crate time) and not let him make mistakes. mistakes aren't the puppy's faults so much as your fault for not watching close enough or not getting the timing right. using a crate also gives you some freedom so the training process isn't a full time job.

as you've been reading - it's a little rough at first bc you want your new baby to have fun all the time, but he needs discipline first. it's totally worth it. now i have a year old hav who i trust to roam the house and play with my cat when we're away. he's basically perfect , except when he gets a shoe - he knows he shouldn't. he runs away (very stealthy) and hides, so he can chew in peace. still haven't figured that one out.

You know your right marlowe'sgirl, I was getting him confused. I know putting him in the crate is the right thing to do. I really think of him as my baby! Why do I feel so sorry for him when he's in the crate? I didn't think I would be this way, but that face, that face! Oh well thanks for the advice, I'll have to suck it up and just do it.

at first, I felt terrible about the crate as well despite all that i had read. however, i realized i must be doing the crate thing right because that's where he'd run after (or if he escaped during) grooming sessions - it was, and still is, his 'safe' place!
