I'm new here and need help

Let me start by saying I've fallen in love with the Havanese, from the first time I saw one when watching the Westminster show. I've been a dog lover all my life and have had many, many furry friends over the years -- usually rescued from somewhere. Last fall, one of my clients mentioned he was getting a Havanese puppy and I followed their progress, from first meeting to training and his process of falling in love.

I almost bought one around Christmas, but something the breeder said scared me off. I found her on the internet and when I saw the puppies (the cutest things I'd ever seen) I called and told her I was interested but I had a few questions. By then I'd done a lot of reading on the subject and I questioned the health testing of the parents. Her annoyed answer that she had no time for all that and that the puppies were tested and deemed healthy brought me up short. She did offer a two year health guarantee, but something about her attitude put me off.

I passed on that puppy and have friends trying to entice me to get other adorable dogs, i.e., lowchen or bichon, but the Havanese have stolen my heart. After reading all the potential hazards of getting a puppy from just anywhere, I would appreciate any advice you can give me in my search for a healthy puppy to share my world with.

Thanks in advance.

First let me say welcome! I've been on this forum only a few weeks myself. It's a friendly group of folks, and there's a wealth of great info here. I've learned so much! I also fell in love with this breed, but, unlike you, had never owned a dog in my life! Our little Havanese has exceeded all expectations, so I would say, stick to your guns re getting this breed. They are wonderful, exceptional dogs!

I think you absolutely made the right decision in passing on that puppy. Any reputable breeder health tests their puppies and parents and is glad to share that info. Sounds suspicious to me & I think your instinct was correct.

I actually found my puppy online from a breeder in my area. In retrospect, I really wasn't as educated/cognizant of as much as I should have been, and picked him up sight unseen, except for many photos on the net and many long conversations with the breeder. I was also under a certain amount of duress at the time. But it all felt very right, and somehow the stars aligned, and, fortunately,he is a complete joy as a companion AKC Havanese. He's now 10 mos. old.

You don't say what area of the country you're in, but there are many fine breeders out there, and if you read the Forum, a fair number are members, and I'm sure the more experienced members here will point you in the right direction. Best of luck!

There are a number of New York/New Jersey members who I'm sure can recommend breeders in your area.

pjewel! Havanese are the greatest. I've had several different breeds over the years and although I loved each and every one of them, my Havanese is the best! Maddie is my second, and after having my first, I would only get a Havanese again.

The best thing you ever did was run away from that breeder! Any breeder that is irritated by you asking about health testing is a breeder to avoid. There's no guarantee a 10 week old puppy will be healthy down the line, but health testing the parents certainly increases the odds in your favor. You're paying alot of money for a Havanese, and you should be assured the parents are health tested and passed. The heartbreak down the line of a dog who is ill or needs expensive surgery isn't worth saving a few dollars or falling for the first adorable puppy you see. Take your time, check with the people on the Forum in your area, verify health testing results on OFA (its not enough just to have a CLIC #), and talk to different breeders. I found in my search that great breeders tend to show their dogs, breed only to better the breed (not for $), belong to Havanese clubs, etc. Their puppies are raised in their homes, not in a kennel. There are some great breeders on this Forum. Check their websites and see what they do for their dogs. Then apply that info to the breeders in your area. If you can't find any you like, then you may have to travel a bit to pick up your puppy. Good luck, and I hope you find the puppy of your dreams!!

Pjewel to the forum.
another good place to get the references is havanese club of america website - http://www.havanese.org/localclub/hcaLocal.htm
You can look up the local clubs, as they usually have breeder references.

Good luck,

-Julia

You've all been so kind in welcoming me. Thanks. I'm investigating possibilities now. I'll check out all your suggestions and let you know the outcome. I so look forward to having my baby's photo up there with the rest.

I was in your shoes just a few months ago...

started researching like crazy in early April and stumbled upon this board....the pupppy forum on this board has a sticky with advice about breeders...

I learned so much and it really made it easy to pre-screen breeders. I know there are many people around you that hopefully will be able to provide you with recommendations.

Welcome and you'll have a hav before you know it!! I was going to wait until August. LOL.
