Heart worm question

I have an 11 week old puppy Cooper. I took him to vet 2weeks ago and they gave me heart worm pills to start. My question is the pills they gave me are good for puppies up to 25 pounds, Cooper is only 4. Should I give him the full dose?

Rosie at 4 months was under 3 lbs. She still only weighs 9.5 lbs. I asked the vet about this very thing when she was a puppy. They say you can't give too much. It is not giving enough that is the problem. Anyway it didn't and still doesn't hurt Rosie.

What kind of heartworm medicine do you guys use? My vet gave me Interceptor and the breeder said to not use Interceptor because it has "too many other things in it."

I'm 'caught in the middle again with you, and I don't know what to do..."

I use Heartgard Plus. It has a wormer in it also. I have used this on dogs for years. I think the plus got added sometime in the last few years--really didn't notice.

No to the fleas. Just heartworms and to control ascarid and hookworm infections. The ones with flea control and heartworm my vet advised against. Said that he had found cancers in dogs that took it, so he wouldn't sell it anymore. That is anidotal from the vet--I have no scientific knowledge.

We are trying a new one called Trifexis which is good for fleas and heartworm both. McGee has had three doses so far with no problem.

I use Interceptor. If that is what you have, divide it in half and use it for 2 months. I can't say for any other brand. I don't have a scientific reason for not using any of the ones that work on fleas also, just seems not good to me.
