Potty Training Help Needed!

Hi there,

Two months ago I adopted two Havanese puppies: Tux is 6 months, and Crosby is 4.5 months. I knew that getting two puppies at once would be challenging, but since I teach middle school, I thought I could handle two puppies.

When either my husband or I am home, we have an accident about once a day, but when we're at work, we come home to a royal mess. Currently, we are leaving them in an 4ft. x4ft. exercise pen for 4-5 hours at a time, bit I am wondering if we should start leaving them in their crates since they are fully crate trained for bed time. At the same time, I feel bad about having them spend so much time in small crates.

When we're home, we take them out every hour, and they pretty much go whenever we say "go potty." We also give them a "puppy party" (treat and playtime) after they go.

Should I be trying to make them hold it longer somehow when we're home? Any advice? Am I just trying to rush this too much?

Thanks,

Nicole

It is set-up in a four-by-four square. Inside they have their beds, a blanket they love, and a few toys. We had newspaper in it at first, but when we discussed the "holding it" issue with the vet about a month ago, he said we should take the newspapers out since it wouldn't give them any motivation to "hold it." When we took the newspapers away, the other accidents in the house went away (for the most part), but there was no improvement when we were gone.
