Smile Grooming Success! :)

Rex is now 13 weeks and I have been grooming him every day in order for him to get used to it and BOY can I tell you it was a HARD 5 weeks! Just the last few days he's been not biting the comb/brush and allowing me to groom him along with the face (which was always the hardest part).

I started spraying bitter apple in his mouth if he'd bite the comb/brush and of course giving him treats during which he goes nuts over just these last few days and that has made a HUGE difference. Especially tonight when he actually just laid down and let me comb/brush him and didn't fight AT ALL.

I had to share my success as I was REALLY proud tonight. Hopefully it will continue!

I've noticed his face/head gets rather greasy looking between baths is this because the hair on his head is thinner? Once I comb it it looks great, but only takes a short while before it goes back to looking greasy.... ?

Congratulations! Guess there is hope for me and Cooper. It's been a semi battle getting him used to the grooming. Have to try special treats and see how it goes.
You give me hope

I feel your happiness! Timmy has been pretty good with combing, but only after we've had a pretty hard play session and he get's his special braided chewy thing. My husband has been playing with him and he seems to have no objections to laying on his back so I can get his tummy which is a great help. We've had a lot of rain here lately so I think a bath will be in order this weekend to clean those dirty feet! Last partial bath I was wetter than him.

Getting started early is key and it sounds like he's catching on well! Continue those treats - they work! You deserve to celebrate - it is a big deal!!!

I love to read posts like yours. Good grooming practices keep your pup healthy, it also lets you see if there are any skin problems, lumps, bumps, it is also good for bonding. Congrats even though your pup gets treats, you also get a reward in how great your pup looks.

Thanks everyone I was really excited as the first 5 weeks I wanted to give up A LOT! - almost everyday! Finally it just seemed to "click" and he was OK with letting me groom him. Think it might be too he's bonded pretty good to me now - my little buddy

Thinking about taking him to a professional groomer next week just so he can get used to that as well. Is 14 weeks to early for that though? I've heard 8 weeks is OK but seems young?!

The most important part is that you got him ready, but tell the groomer to go easy and be gentle.

I would ask if you could watch while they groom. No one is going to be as gentle as you. Some places put the dogs in cages to dry that bothers me especially if the heat is hot. They also like to trim the paws to pointed I like rounded paws. Once a groomer shaved maddies bottom without permission and I really didn't like that.
Mine both look more greasey or not as fluffy soon after there bath too.
