Poop issues

Does anyone else have issues w their puppy wanting to eat their poop. Coincidentally , truffles ran off with the toilet paper.about the length of our bedroom! Lucky I caught her before she unwound the whole role lol

YES! Rex started doing this a few weeks ago. It could either A) be a sign of malnutrition so they're turning around and looking for the nutrients in their poop (gross I know) or B) they're doing it out of play and/or dominance. For my Rex I'm pretty sure it's out of dominance/play because I go and pick it up right after and he's thinking "wait a second I want that!" .... I've been keeping it there a little longer and if he goes after it I distract him with a toy or something and if that doesn't work then it's a shot in the mouth with bitter apple. Seems to be working so far!

You can search for this...I don't have that problem luckily but it seems like I remember reading there is something you can feed them that is supposed to make it less appealing to them......I just can't remember what it is lol...

I found this article after I did a search on the forum....other's suggested spraying the poop with the bitter apple spray.....adding a little pineapple or canned pumpkin to the diet is supposed to deter them from eating it were soem of the suggestions on the other thread...and some said they just outgrew it.......good luck!

My Princess had this disgusting little habit as a puppy (she's now almost a year old now). I was advised to go outside with her (now that's a pain in Minnesota in the winter) every time carrying a bag to pick up after her so she never has the chance to get to it. That has worked. I fear that I might be going outside with her every time for the rest of her life. We have a fenced yard that she can access through our kitchen patio door so it WOULD be nice to just let her outside and close the door. <Sigh> However, I am really disturbed by the whole poop-eating thing (and yes, I do understand that it's a natural dog-thing) so I continue to go outside with her. My girl is a real kisser/licker and I just can't get past the idea of letting her lick me or anyone else after eating you know what! Yuck-o! So, the only advice I can give is to watch your dog and pick up after her immediately. Hopefully, in time, Truffles will lose interest or grow out of it. Good luck!

My daughter's puppy did this. They put pineapple juice in his kibble and it worked for them.

Cooper doesn't do that and he won't go outside alone when he does poop, after I pick it up, he goes over to make sure I got it all up, bark chips also. lol
He will sniff and then sit and give me *the look* if I missed a little. His area he picked out is covered with pine bark chips.

Yes, there are LOTS of threads on this on the forum. Fortunately, Kodi has never done it, but I was was so worried that he MIGHT, after what I read on the forum, that I was fanatical about picking up all poop IMMEDIATELY. He really never had access to it to develop the taste.

I also remember that, besides pineapple, there is a commercial product you can feed them that supposedly makes their poop taste bad. It's mentioned in some of the threads. Do a search!

Yes I dealt with this too. Agree with Karen, REALLY try not to ever let him get it, sort of like NEVER peeing in the house as once it starts it is hard to stop. I have taught a pretty strong "leave it" command for many things (toys, dropped items etc. This came in VERY handy with the poop. I did "leave it" for sticks on the ground and then threw them, then leave it for poop too, with treat at first. My" leave it" is not a negative it his eyes it is a way to have fun,(thrown toy, treat, good boy pats etc...GOOD LUCK he rarely eats poop now! OF course this only works if you are out with him!!!
