tearing

Hi everyone. My Gabby is such a sweet girl. My only issue is her tearing. Her eyes tear so bad, and of course, stain. They are always wet. Anyone know why they tear so bad, and what I can do to help? I even trimmed the hair right over her eyes, thinking it might help not to have the hair in them. Thanks

I wish I could help you!! I will be watching this thread with GREAT interest because my hav has VERY wet eyes too. I resorted to using Tylan powder last spring to help with the red yeast tear staining. She had allergy testing done in May and has been on homecooked food ever since. Yet her eyes/face is ALWAYS SO wet... literally WET. After I clean the goop from her eyes in the morning I even use a kleenex to 'soak' up some of the moisture... NO idea why this happens. It doesn't seem to bother her, but when she come up for a snuggle she has a WET face!!

Dab some corn starch on it and it should dry it out for the time being, actually if you put corn starch every day, that should help keep it dry at least a portion of the time.

I know with Gucci, the cold wind can make her tear or certain allergens, she tears a lot during pollen season, but not as much in the Fall/Winter, so I really don't think hers is food related.

Jack still has wet eyes and stains. I am only controlling the mess beneath Jack's eyes. I found it takes DAILY every care of the eyes, if you don't, the staining only gets worse. I clean the corners of the eyes twice a day. The wipes I use do not w2ce fclean out the corner of the eyes, but it prevents the staining from gong doen.

Where I live, there is no cold wind. I did cut the hair above her eyes, so it stays out of her eyes, but to no avail, ..........

Have you ever had her tear ducts flushed? I have a 10yr old that has always had this wetness problem and most of it is due to his tear ducts getting clogged easily. The vet said it's actually rather difficult to get his cleaned out, don't remember exacty why (they're crooked?). You can have it done during a teeth cleaning or an opthalmologist can do it in the office with no anesthesia, I've had it done both ways. It helps a lot at first for Dooley but in a month or two it starts up again, but for some dogs it helps for much longer.

I also use Tylan powder to control the staining and am looking for some other way. In another thread I asked if anyone has ever tried Tearlax, www.tearlax.com, but haven't seen any responses. Seems like this is such a huge issue for so many white dogs, wonder why there aren't better solutions. We all have tried changing foods, filtered water, no plastic bowls, eye washes, etc., sigh....

With Smokey it was some type of food allergy.............once I switched to a grain free food (Taste of The Wild) his tear stains disappeared and that was the only change I made other than also eliminating all treats except freezed dried chicken or cheese........I attached the before and after pic
