Electric Cords

My husband read somewhere that electric cords are a real hazard to puppies. Our cords are mostly under sofas or tables, but surely could be accessed by an industrious puppy. I know the things they make to plug up outlets, but wonder if there's some sort of wrap for wires or something we should put in place? And no, puppy will not have full run of the house, but when we met him we could see that he was fast on his feet (actually fell over his feet running at 5 weeks, but adorably active and adventurous). Thank you in advance.

Yes, electrical cords certainly are a danger! There are tubes you can run cords through, but puppy teeth are strong... I'm not sure I'd trust even those completely. Many puppies and dogs find Bitter Apple spray very aversive, and will stay away from anything it is sprayed on. Kodi thought nothing of Bitter Apple, but we did find another solution. (because he was directly targeting cords) We got the hottest hot sauce we could lay our hands on, (from Fireflies Restaurant) and dabbed that on the cords. One taste was all he needed! Yes, I'm sure it burned his mouth, but far better that than getting electrocuted. After that one taste, he would back right away from anything we put it on. We even cured him of chewing the fringe off our orientals by putting hot sauce on strips of cloth and pinning them to the rug.

They have an uncanny ability to find cords -- our attempts to hide them did not work. We put all computer/moveable electronic cords away now, when we are not using them. And, we have treated cords that we can't put away with hot sauce, per suggestions here.

When Augie was a puppy, he liked to go after cords - I would throw pillows over the cords from the lamps. He outgrew it and hasn't bothered them in a long while.

Finn was never one to go after the cords. HOWEVER, just recently, when I was drying him after a bath, sitting on the floor against the wall with him on my lap, drying away and focusing on trying to get his ears dry, and I guess not paying attention to his mouth, I felt him jump. When I investigated, I found that he had chewed through the rubber on the hair dryer cord down to the wire!! I pay attention now when I am drying, for sure!

I like Karen's idea with hot sauce if the bitter apple doesn't do the trick. I had a Westie that wasn't phased by bitter apple . . .so I used red pepper from an Indian market, which is MANY times hotter than what can be purchased at most grocers, sprinkling a little of that around areas with cords, or mixing with water and putting in a spray bottle, did the trick. It's also good for sprinkling in the garden if bunnies are a problem

Pillows wouldn't have worked with Kodi, for sure! He was DEATH on throw pillows!!! I just recently replaces all the throw pillows in our family room because he is past the chewing stage now!

I had everything with cords blocked off with rubbermaid containers and their lids. Then I'd find him trapped in their behind the barricade and have to go rescue him. I'm not sure whose stupid idea it was to put flappy labels on every cord, because those just draw Brody to them like a magnet....flappy paper...must have!

Hide all cords. 2 laptop cords and an iPod cord destroyed.....

My fault but geez.....

Also, the second laptop cord caught on fire. I didn't notice Jack had gotten it. Smoke around your laptop is terrifying.

Pam

Well, if Finn routinely went after cords, that wouldn't work with him either! He has wrecked pillows, couch cushions and covers, afghans, cabinets, most of the toys, etc. But, for some reason, UNTIL the hair dryer cord, cords have not been an issue with him. I certainly hope he outgrows chewing on things at some point....soon!

I bought some hard rubber-like toys today - made in Montana - hope they last longer than 15 minutes. Called Zogoflex.

Kodi flatly refuses to play with or chew on anything made of hard rubber. The Kongs he would work at to get whatever was inside, but I had to stop using them because he destroyed them. Aren't puppies FUN? You're reminding me why I'm not ready for another one!
