rough play

I just read the thread about rough puppy play and I was just witnessing the opposite of puppy beating up on big dog.

Gryff was scaring me with how he was playing with Jinx. It was wonderful to see them having fun, but he kept biting at his neck and rolling him over. Jinx never yelped or made any attempt to get out of the situation and every time things came to any kind of pause, Jinx was the first one to go right back to rough and tumble.

I never had a dog & puppy together before so I don't know what to expect. I am guessing that you are all going to tell me that I should be excited that they are playing but I am just fearful that Gryff could hurt Jinx.

Am I being a worry wort?

Oh, btw, Gryff was still doing the butt thing, but a whole lot less of it.

From my reading (because I'm otherwise a complete novice), I know that the lying on the back thing is a sign of submission and maybe Gryff is just asserting his alpha dog status with the baby who perhaps has less trouble accepting his status than Gryff believes. ANyways, bet you are happy to say good bye to the butt thing.

I think it would be impossible to have them play without Jinx rolling over. He's so low to the floor.

I've taken to calling him meatball. That's what he looks like when he's rolling around.

This is just how dogs play. I think if you could observe a litter, you will see the puppies playing together like that, and also playing with their Mom's or older dogs. I wouldn't worry as long as it doesn't get out of hand. If Jinx is going back for more, then it must be ok. If he yelps and backs away from Gryff, you will know that he did not like what happened. Just make sure someone is watching them when they are playing so no one gets hurt.

I'm just so happy to read how well Gryff is doing with the little guy.

I've been taught that if you are concerned, separate them for a moment, then let them go. If they both go right back at it, it's all good fun. If one tries to get away once he has a chance, it's probably getting too rough.

Two of mine are 2 and the youngest was a year in Dec....they are 12, 10 and 8lbs...I sometimes think the playing gets too rough and will break it up...especially when two gang up on one...I don't know how they determine whose turn it is going to be lol but it is always someone different....but also sometimes they hit each other so hard the other one goes rolling down the hilll.....and sometimes when the youngest is running and her tail goes straight out behind her the other ones will grab that tail and I swear she goes airborne before she hits the ground again...it scares me! All that said, however, they never act like they are hurt and they are always at it again......maybe we worry too much???

You're exactly right - they DO look like meatballs at that age. How cute!
