Two steps forward, one step back.

Timmy's been soooo good with his house training that I decided to give him a little more freedom yesterday. He is now allowed in our living room/playroom and screened in porch, supervised. I thought about how he would react to being on the porch and worried that he would think he's outside and could go where ever he wanted, guess what?... he peed. I was kind of startled, being right there with him, and might have spoken a little louder than usual, because today while we were out there he scratched on the screen and we went out the back door and he peed. I don't have an outside door on my porch so I need to take him back through the living room and family room to the back door. So to sum things up, I told him once, "No way, not here" and he seemed to get it, can that be? I shouldn't underestimate his intelligence, of course he knows where to go now. Oh and by the way he LOVES being on the porch. Dirty puppy, tired puppy, happy puppy.

Catching them in the act with an honest, in the moment reaction is sometimes VERY effective in getting your message across. Just "yelling" at a dog isn't likely to work well, especially if it's doene often. But if your response is genuine, especially if you rarely yell, it can make a real impression! It sounds like this is just what happened here.
