Havs and Kongs

So I had originally bought a puppy kong for the soon-to-arrive puppy but then I read in Diane Klumb's book, The Havanese that they didn't really like those that they preferred softer toys.

What is your real-life experience with this? Do your havs like the kongs just as much? Turn their noses up at them?

TIA!

Mine loves the kong. She even goes for her big sister's extra large adult kong for aggressive chewers! She carries it around in her mouth, chews it, throws it, chases it, etc. Filling it with peanut butter will occupy her for almost a half hour which is great if you are trying to get some housework done and a little dog underfoot starts to get in the way.

Squeeky toys are the toy of choice for Timmy, balls and stuffed toys. I use a kong sometimes, usually for lunch. I fill it with dry kibble and soak it in water so it's harder to get out. Timmy does seem to like it, he's six months old, and it keeps his attention. I started out putting in dry food so he had some success and when he improved I switched to soaking the food. Some people freeze stuff inside I don't do that. I normally use it if I'm going out and he'll be by himself for a while. One time I forgot something and came right back in to find my cat working with Timmy to get the food out, partners in crime.

I have used a Kong since we first brought Tillie home... she LOVES her kong!! I try to put different things in it each time, mix it up. Sometimes I freeze it (if I remember and have time!) I ususally use cream cheese, pb or pureed sweet potato and put a few peices of deyhdrated salmon, or some kibble or cheese in it... I don't "FILL" it, I just make sure there is yummy stuff in it! She typically gets 1 a day when I leave for work (I only work 3 hrs a day) in her crate. She RUNS to her crate... I think if you put stuff inside that your dog LOVES then they will come to LOVE the Kong too! Tillie is almost 2 yrs old and she loves her kong, we will probably always use one!!

The trouble with Kodi is that he didn't use any of the "normal" ways of getting food out of the Kong. He just chewed the darned things apart, and I was afraid he'd choke on the pieces. He has even destroyed the black, pit bull type ones!

Besides not wanting him to choke on pieces, they get pretty expensive if you only get one use out of them!

Maccabee doesn't care for his kongs. He likes Skinz and balls. But, his all-time favorite toy is an empty plastic water bottle.

Oh, those Starborn pups! They are all alike, it seems! That's Kodi's list of favorites too. Except his FAVORITE water bottles are the gallon variety with the handle!

So, basically Havs are just like any other dogs and it just depends on the individual puppy. Okay I won't return the kong and I'll just see what Sadie likes.

Thanks all!

Hi!
Great thread! What size Kong is appropriate for a young puppy? I've read Ian Dunbar's book about using Kong type toys to feed a puppy instead of a regular bowl of food. It seems like the x-small Kongs may be too small but the small size too big. I'm not getting the puppy until August but am already buying what I think I will need. Any suggestions?

Best,

the size we use is the same size as the "puppy kong" which ever size that is ... just had to upgrade to a red one when her adult teeth were all in. This is her 2nd kong and she is almost 2 ... she isn't a HUGE chewer, obviously!
