pee pads...

So far, Paddington's been great - he pees and poops both outside and consistently on his pee pad. Up until a few days ago, when he decided that sleeping on his pee pad is more fun (even if there's pee)...I'm not sure why he's started doing this!!! And when he's not sleeping or lying down on them, he shreds them like mad! He's 17 weeks old, and up to this point he hasn't really slept on the pee pads like he is doing now! :/

I figured because it's getting hotter (it's summer-like temperatures right now) and the pee-pad was cooler than his bed...but this morning he wouldn't pee or poop on his pad, which was fine because I took him outside to do it (some days I just can't take him outside in the morning, as the sound of the door's alarm chime wakes up the others in the house and they've been complaining) - he's trained to pee and poop on his pad too...

I've read that if they start lying down on their pee pad, a firm "no" and putting them off the pee pad and onto an area they CAN lie down on is the way to go, but today I told him "NO" much more sternly than normal and put him on his feet away from the pee pad when he tried to lie down on it. He promptly went to his crate and lay down, and then wouldn't pee on the pad when he came out. I took him out at 7 (half-an-hour later than I normally do) as I was worried he hadn't peed or pooped. He did his thing outside. But I called my brother (who is home with him) and asked if he had peed or pooped [Paddy has a pee pad in his pen, which he regularly soaks at least 3x......tmi? too bad!], and my brother said he hadn't.

Have I scared him off of peeing on his pad??? I felt like I was mean to him this morning, because I was VERY firm and adamant about not lying down on the pad...

Let him lay on it. Mine lay on theirs but they use them. I just change out the wet ones fairly often.

Trooper went thru a phase where he would lay on them ALLLLL the time. We figured out that it was like a bed, but COOLER than his bed. What is the fabric on the top of his bed? If it's that fluffy off-white stuff, it may be too hot. Trooper's bed is now inside out, and he likes it that way, that way he's laying on the microfiber side and not that fluffy side.

Trooper also decided that his pee pads were great toys. We invested in Ugodog for his inside option, and put the pee pads in there. We haven't looked back since! No shredding and it really helped curb the accidents too.

Now he much prefers to go outside.

But I'm with Becky, let him lay on it, he'll quit at some point.

Thanks, I'm gonna try letting him just lay on it. I took his bed (a little white fluffy thing) out of his crate a few days ago, as I thought it might be too hot. He has his little blanket inside his crate, as well as a small pillow he lays on from time to time. He pushes them to the side when he's feeling hot. I'll have to just be patient and let him take his coldness where he can. It is getting way too hot here in Toronto

Jasmine has always lain on hers, and hasn't used them for pee since around the age your pup is. We stopped putting the pads down because she was only using them to lie on. I was hoping to have her both house and pee-pad trained but it didn't work out that way - she just prefers to go outside.

Leyla's an inside dog and she uses wee wee pads. I live in a condo and work all day so now she has full access to the apartment and i leave a weewee pad in my room (because she sleeps in there with me and the door is closed...so she takes herself to the potty place instead of me having to wake up to take her) and another wee wee pad by the bathroom. Her poop doesn't smell because she eats Holistic dry food (Wellness Small Breed) and gets wet food (Natural Balance from Nutro) only rarely. She uses one pad mainly for pooping and the other location mainly for peeing. And because her breeder trained her to go potty outside before I got her at 13 weeks, she will pee and poop outside when I take her out (about 3 times a week). She fits my lifestyle so well and is so sweet and well-adjusted that I can't help but be grateful for having her.
