Help on travel

I'll be taking Maggie to Florida for Thanksgiving. She will be use to a crate as well as an expen. Is there some sort of folding crate or expen that I can take with luggage? My family in Florida has a Bichon and they are comfortable with any possible "accidents". Since Maggie will be 8 months in a new setting I wasn't sure how to create the most comfort/familiarity for her.

Help

I just had a thought about getting an expen or crate for Maggie in Florida or having your family pick one up for you or even buying something online and having it shipped directly to your destination so that you do not have to shlep it with you on the plane. Most likely the airline would charge you for a piece of baggage (unless you fly with an airline that gives you free baggage).

Maggie would probably need a medium-size crate by that time. My dogs use a 24" long x 18" wide x 21" high 2-door wire crate that folds down for storage or transport. some have a carrying handle. There are also soft-sided crates available.

Another option is Freecycle. Many people prefer to give away their no-longer-needed items to like-minded people. You can join a Freecycle group to participate. I just checked out some groups on Long Island and found 2 Suffolk County Freecycle groups:

Since I do not know where in Florida you are headed, you can look up Florida groups and join here: http://www.freecycle.org/group/US/Florida

You may wish to check out the selection of crates and expens on Amazon:

I don't think I would much care to travel with an xpen or big crate, you could have your family pick one up from a 2nd hand store or even borrow from a friend?

I've travelled a lot with Gucci and I can tell you that they more or less create new routines when they are in new places no matter how much you try to recreate the home routine. Even if you do let Maggie sleep in bed with you or use baby gates to help keep her to one room when you leave, they will fall back into their 'home' routine as soon as they get 'home'. I've noticed this with even havanese that I have dog-sat for several times, I've had the moms write me 4 page instructions on their routines and they *may* follow one or two things, lol..maybe its the distraction or excitement of being somewhere new that throws them off, but I'm sure you will both have fun. I LOVE traveling with my 'boo'.

The BEST investment I have made to travel with IS the dog stroller. She can go many more places with me and is so well behaved, she just sleeps in there and if we are at the mall or someplace, I'll throw a blanket over it and nobody even knows she is there, and I don't have to leave her alone very much. People are much more lenient with dogs if they are confined in a bag or stroller and not walking around on a leash, as the main issue with that is that a dog might bite or go potty somewhere, that doesn't happen with the stroller.

I totally agree with Kara! Tillie adores her stroller, jumps into it when it comes out! I actually keep it in the van as I use it SO much (2-3 times a week regularly). I didn't get it until she was about a year old and now I wonder how we all survived the first year without it!! As long as she is confined I have found she is welcome most everywhere except inside restaurants (of course) and museums.

All the suggestions are good, but I always say the less stress on the family the best many people freak when they think a pup might have an accident, my DH is one of those, this but a strain on everyone and the dog. My suggestion is to of course buy an inexpensive x pen, but for everyones piece of mind get a cute doggie diaper only to be used when she is running in the house freely and you can not watch her every minute. Keep up the house training and remember the diaper is a safty net so your family can have piece of mind and you can have a stress free visit.

Poohkey miss you, monkey.
